EU accuses Google of market abuse, launches antitrust investigation into Android

The EU Competition Commission can fine Google up to 10% of its annual (EU) sales if its found guilty of cheating competitors by distorting internet searches to favour itself - up to $6.6 billion.

Quote:
The European Union accused Google of cheating competitors by distorting internet search results to favour its shopping service, and launched another antitrust investigation into its Android mobile operating system.

Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said the US tech giant, which dominates internet search engines worldwide, had been sent a Statement of Objections - effectively a charge sheet - to which it can respond.

She also said other probes into Google's business practices would continue. "I am concerned that the company has given an unfair advantage to its own comparison shopping service, in breach of EU antitrust rules," she said.
from the ABC: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-04-1...-abuse/6395996

And ....

Quote:
Rejecting suggestions - recently from President Barack Obama himself - that the EU was pursuing an anti-American, protectionist policy, Vestager, a liberal former economy minister, said about a quarter of the firms which had complained to the EU authorities about Google were themselves U.S.-owned.
Quote:
It also launched another antitrust investigation into the Android mobile operating system, a key element in the U.S. tech giant's strategy to maintain revenues from online advertising as people switch from Web browser searches to smartphone apps.

I can't find the reference at the moment, but I heard on the TV news that Amazon was one of the complainants.

Here's some relevant context:
https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20...nnounced.shtml

Quote:

This also happens to come out the very same day that the EU's digital commissioner, Gunther Oettinger, has announced that the EU should regulate American internet companies to provide a bigger opportunity for European companies:
"The European Union should regulate Internet platforms in a way that allows a new generation of European operators to overtake the dominant U.S. players", the bloc’s digital czar said, in an unusually blunt assessment of the risks that U.S. Web giants are viewed as posing to the continent’s industrial heartland.
Of course, a billion or so vig can't hurt.

More at the source.

Me, I'm moving on to another soap opera.

Apparently, Microsoft is at least partly behind the lobbying effort against Google.

Forgot to quote the article:

Quote:
Microsoft has kept its coffers full for the fight, spending more on lobbying here than any European company. And Microsoft has founded or funded a cottage industry of splinter groups. The most prominent, the Initiative for a Competitive Online Marketplace, or Icomp, has waged a relentless public relations campaign promoting grievances against Google. Icomp hosts webinars, panel discussions and news conferences. It conducted a study that suggested changes made by Google to appease regulators were largely window dressing.

They learned how that game is played during their trials. They're just paying it forward...

Yep. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the EU try this once before with Google? That case basically got dropped and then Microsoft and Cohorts (no vested interest there) started frothing at the mouth about it. I'm guessing part of the motivation for the EU to go after Google is the "shake down" money they hope to receive -- and probably the bribe money they've already received from M$ and their cronies. Not that Google isn't big enough to defend themselves, but it's not anti-trust when customers have a choice. The reason I use Google's search engine is because it works better -- and I'm not a big fan of Google, the corporation. Bing is simply crap. If Microsoft wants my search engine business they're going to have invest their money into making a better search engine.

So are we going to see another EU investigation of Microsoft because their Windows monopoly on the desktop? The way they handle OEM contracts makes a lot better fodder for anti-trust allegations than Google's practices.

Ah, but we're in the "post PC" era, don'cha know?
Microsoft isn't the devil anymore, now it is Google and Amazon.

Seems like the socialist gnomes in Brussels are running out of things to screw others with.

But I have to say if I go into Starbucks and ask them where the best place to buy a coffee today is they always suggest their competition down the road in preference to themselves. Same with McDonalds, ask them where the best place is for a hamburger and they always suggest I go to Burger King.

So I suppose if I asked Google for a recommendation as to the best email service provider and they were to suggest GMail first, rather than one of their competitors, then that would be just disgusting and they should be punished to the greatest extent possible.

Along similar lines when we go to the local butcher he always tries to get us to go to the local fishmongers instead. Funny old world.

I am surprised that the EU doesn't just go all the way and accuse the USA of antitrust and try to levy their 10% fine there too.

A 10% anti-trust fine of the US GDP would go along way toward bailing out "PIIGS" Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain, and dare I mention "France." A 2nd G for Great Britain is sometimes added but that is arguable.
