Phoenix Pick chooses the Kindle format-time to boycott!

Yep, Phoenix Pick, an imprint of Arc Manor, has chosen the Amazon Kindle as it's 'format of choice' for the ebook versions of dozens of great novels. This despite the far wider range of devices supporting Mobipocket.

It's time to boycott them until they come to their senses and offer their ebook selections in a wider range of formats.

Have you emailed them asking if they intend to expand into other formats and telling them how easy it is to offer Mobipocket as well?

Yep. Several times. Last one was 'pointed'.

I do not see how a boycott helps. They just might decide "Hey were not selling any ebooks, might as well get out of the business all together." If they start selling a lot for the Kindle they might say "Hey this ebook thing is a good deal for us, perhaps we should expand our offerings to other formats."

I would suspect more likely that Amazon paid a fairly large sum to get it exclusive. If so then more of this sort of Amazonian activity will eventually dry up many sources of ebooks for other ebook readers.

Is Phoenix Pick such a big deal that Amazon would spend a large sum of money to get exclusive rights. I could see paying a large amount of money for the Harry Potter franchise, but not Phoenix Pick. If your suspicion is true I would support a boycott of the Amazon Kindle.

I would suggest that if you want to boycott, follow Derek's lead and email the company. Let them know why you're not buying. Otherwise, like Madam B said, they may just think there's no market for their ebooks.

Most "exclusivity deals" are only for a limited time period - 3 or 6 months. It's not in the publisher's interests to sign away their rights to sell elsewhere permanently. I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

Such a decision will be making a lot of people turn to piracy, just to get the book they want. Internet is too open a place to try and imply such ridiculous restrictions.

Sorry, but I beg to differ. A publisher is free to impose whatever sales restriction they wish on an item. That does not make it "legitimate" to take that item without paying for it merely because you disagree. It's their property to do with as they wish.

What she said. I agree it'd be nice if they supported other formats, but right now the Kindle is helping the cause in general... so I'm okay with it. Of course, I also have a Kindle so maybe I'm biased.

It's their right to make such a restriction and it doesn't make piracy ethically supportable in my opinion but that doesn't mean it's the smartest decision they could make. Maybe I'm just uncharitable in my estimation of human tendencies. I think there are quite a few people who will do what's right even if it involves some sacrifice. I think most people want to be good, want to be thought of as good, but if doing the right thing is inconvenient and they know they won't get caught, they'll do the selfish thing.

But what is morally right is very unclear here and people will come to different conclusions. It might for example be morally right to break laws to force a change that makes the world a much better place to live in.

Indeed, it is apparently "morally right" to invade a country and overthrow a dictator, and I'm sure that breaks some laws of the affected country at least

(And this makes my 600th post.)
