Formatting errors in Mobi output

I am converting a book in PDF format to MOBI to upload to amazon kindle. The results are generally good, but with some minor formatting problems. Randomly, spaces appear within words, for example, instead of "Mary" it outputs "M ary". Also a few problems with lines splitting in the middle rather than going from margin to margin, for example, "the cow jumped over
the moon."

Any solutions? I would start with a file format other than PDF, but the original files are Wordperfect which Calibre does not input. Thank you.

Welcome to the world of converting PDF (it sucks). If you have the Wordperfect files can you save them as RTF or HTML? Maybe you'll get better results.

Quite true, although the real source of the problem is not the conversion from PDF. It is, instead, an issue with how the PDF itself was generated.

The breaks you are seeing almost certainly occurred during the generation of the PDF. Reassembling the broken text blocks during conversion without the occasional "flaw" is all but impossible.
