Using Sigil's Metadata Editor to tag ebooks with 'Collection' tags
Hi Sigil users,
I'm wondering if there's a way to use Sigil's tag editor to insert tags which my Sony Reader could read and organize books with its Collection features? |

Sigil has a list of standard meta data fields. But you can't add non-standard fields using the metadata editor. You need to go into the .opf and add them manually. Once you've done that, then any device/app that can read metadata will be able to see it.

The Sony uses tags identify books in a collection, there are no special series tags. What you can do, is use the Calibre tags for series and use Calibre to place books on the Sony. In that way the tags will be used correctly.

I was afraid of that. I didn't want to resort to using Calibre, but alas I guess I have to if I wish to have my books organized on my reader. Thanks for the consideration guys.

Calibre is a very good library management tool. I use it for that and only that. Also I will not let it change my files.

As I'm sure that Calibre is a great app for your use, it isn't practical for me. I currently store reading materials within my DEVONthink databases and drag and drop files to my reader that I wish to read. To use Calibre would mean that I would have to add several steps in the process just to do a simple task that is no different that renaming a file.
I guess I'll have to wait for a release of a new app that provides the ability to edit singular files. |

I am not quite sure what the issue is and what kind of app you are waiting for. You can edit a single ePUB with Sigil without a problem. You can add any kind of tags you want. Official tags via the editor, unofficial tags via the OPF. The issue you apparently have, is that the Sony doesn't use a special tag for collections. It uses the standard tags to guess the collection AFAK. So, what do you want the app to do?

The series information in that program is also the calibre styled metadata tag. It will not work on the Sony Reader. I vaguely remember reading about one specific reader that understood the Calibre series tag.

Sigil -- css code for headings
I have an epub that has an html contents file but I don't know how it was built. None of the headings have heading tags -- just standard <p> tags with various attributes. i.e., the toc.ncx file is empty. I need to create a TOC but I don't want to go through all the html files (80+) and enter the h1/h2/h3 tags.
So, two questions -- is there a way to reverse engineer the existing html TOC into a toc.ncx file?, and/or is there a way to use the css file to add a 'heading' attribute to a <p> tag? |

I also tried Calibre's system and it's clunky all the way around. I've got to hook up the reader itself and transfer the files from Calibre into the device for the reader to read the series tags as collections. Right now I just used Sigil to edit the basic tags and then drag and drop the files to the SD card. |

Again, what you want cannot be done. There is not official metadata tag for series. Calibre uses its own. I don't know whether Calibre converts the tags to normal keyword tags so that the Sony can pick it up or whether Calibre adapts it directly in the database of the reader.
If you don't want to use Calibre, fine. That is your choice. |

I appreciate the feedback Toxaris, but if I wanted help with using Calibre I wouldn't have posted this thread in the Sigil section of the forums.
