Not Lauren Bacall, although you're in the right area. He was a cricketer, amongst other sports (primarily famous for cricket though). |

OK, so mahal48 takes the win with those last two answers.
Winston Churchill was imprisoned in, and escaped from, a POW camp in Pretoria during the Boer War. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. C. B. Fry played both football and cricket for England (captaining the team in the latter) and held the world long jump record for a period. He was allegedly offered the throne of Albania in 1920.
