What I've read of Henry Miller already will last my lifetime.

sun surfer has widely ranging tastes, if I go by his two nominations.

Not in this thread, but once the choices have been narrowed down, you'll then have a chance to vote in the run-off poll, which will go up shortly after this poll closes (01-26-2012 at 04:50 PM).

In the nomination thread only, you are allowed three votes, but you aren't allowed to use more than one per book.

I made my choice for numerous reasons:

1. The book sounds very interesting (to me, anyway).

2. I haven't read an actual romance novel in 20+ years.

3. I wanted something contemporary/modern.

4. A little sex never hurt anybody (with a healthy heart).

That was a tough vote for me.

I would love to get back into the Outlander series again, but with the length of the book and my other books I'm reading, do I really want to commit to it?

I've read a couple of the other books already and can highly recommend Nora Roberts/JD Robb (and although yes, its part of a series, the way this is written, you don't have to read others in the series, so don't let that stop you from voting for this one!)

I've been trying to get my book club to read "I Capture the Castle"; I've heard such good things about this choice, but I didn't realize that its not easily accessible via ebook in the US.

Jennifer Crusie is a great author, always lots of fun to read, she would be a good choice; but ultimately I voted for a modern romance that I haven't read...or even heard of before these nominations!

I voted for the one I would most like to read, not one of the ones I thought would be "good for me." Would have voted for 3 if I could . . .

I have been peversely looking forward to the Romance category, as I have never knowingly read anything from that genre. I am a bit disappointed, therefore, that the selections are not more out-and-out romance (where's Mills & Boon and Harlequin when you need them? ).

So at the moment I'm not sure what to vote for - I'll have a closer look at the blurbs and decide later.

I'm happy to know that when I get home from school/work tomorrow, the initial results will be in. I haven't had time to read much of anything this week and I really don't want to slip into a slump so early in the year.

The run-off poll is up. The choices are Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Had I voted, Nyssa's choice would have received two votes.

Tender is the Night quote translated.

I didn't vote, because I had no basis for any opinion, and felt I would be satisfied with what was chosen. I decided to read Tender is the Night first, because it appears to be shorter, and I was better assured of success in completing it. (My reading speed has slowed greatly in recent years.)
I haven't finished yet, and am enjoying Fitzgerald's mellifluous prose greatly.
Near the end of Chapter 11 is a statement in French. My knowledge of French allows me to order certain breads and desserts, and my attempts to speak it could cause an international incident.
I ran the quote through babelfish and got this:
Do you want to regulate my honorairies? Naturally it is for medical care only. Mr. Barban has only one ticket of thousand and cannot regulate them and the other left its porte-monnaie at his place.
I just thought I would share.
