Post Sapper: Ask For Ronald Standish. v1, 2 Sep 2008

1933 collection of detective stories by British author "Sapper" (Herman Cyril McNeile), also published as Ronald Standish.

Description from Amazon:

Ronald Standish is a collection of a dozen short stories about the hero of the title. Standish had first appeared as a supporting character in other Sapper tales. He is akin to Sherlock Holmes in many ways, though rather less cultured and more sporting than Holmes. Like Holmes he lives in rooms in well to do London with a pal, Bill Leyton. Standish is wealthy but takes on detective work as a hobby.

The stories are decidedly Holmesian. A client will appear in their rooms with a problem, which is then related. Standish asks questions and comments, and then goes to the scene of the crime. The whodunnit then takes form, with the villain receiving his comeuppance (with the exception of Irma in the Drummond tales, the villains in Sapper's world are invariably male).

There are murders, thefts and smuggling in this collection of tales, each of which is complete in itself. For those who like the Holmes stories, albiet with a more muscular edge, they can be safely recommended.

Enjoy!
