did i delete the kindle OS files?
hi,

i've got a B008 WIFI firmware 3.1, which was running kindle-jailbreak-0.6.N, kindle-nolog_0.1, and kindle-usbnetwork-0.32.N.

i recently uninstalled all the hacks, my goal was to get to a clean 3.3.

i must have gotten overzealous because in my root directory, the only directories that i see with "ls -la" are:
- audible
- documents
- music
- system

where is the /usr directory? or the /opt? aren't they supposed to be here?

i don't see another partition either, so i am very confused, because i don't understand how this device is actually booting up.


previously, i recall i previously manually edited the /usr/bin/showlog file, and i manually edited some other conf files when i enabled SSH.

but now i don't see any config files anywhere.

my problem is now updating to firmware 3.3 now gives a failure. i just want to go back to first a clean 3.1 then update to a clean 3.3.

so i am guessing i accidently lost all the important boot files?

i can't update nor go to the kindle store.

yet otherwise, the kindle works fine and reboots fine.

if i lost the files, can someone please tar up the root files from a B008 WIFI 3.1 firmware for me?

or is there a way i can extract these files from the 3.1 firmware file, so that i can then do a proper update to 3.3?

incidentally, when I successfully applied the jailbreak to 3.1 a while ago, ever since, the kindle identified itself mistakenly as a "Kindle WIFI and 3G" model, which it wasn't, it was just a WIFI model. i doubt this is relevant though...

Umm, does your Kindle boot up? If it does, nothing's deleted. Amazon designed the device to hide all the system partitions, because if it isn't hidden, users may accidentally delete OS files. Your other problems, contact amazon about it.

The exported directory over USB is not the root directory (/), but /mnt/us, therefore you see the directories under it, and not /opt, /usr and the rest of the directories under root.

If your update fails because of some files you changed/removed, your easiest option is to install jailbreak and usbnetwork again, and then ssh into the kindle, check the log file for the problematic files, and restore them.

So are you saying that when you plug in the Kindle via USB to a Windows OS the files that come up automatically like 'documents' etc are not in the root directory? How do you ensure the hack files are put in the root directory then if you can't see it? Instructions for installation of hacks say either put them in the 'root' which I have assumed is what appears but others say /mnt/us which I can't find. I have installed Duokan does this make a difference?

OK, thanks everyone, your info set me on the right path.

So right now i just successfully reinstalled kindle-jailbreak-0.6.N and update_usbnetwork_0.32.N_k3w_install

I can now telnet in via USB networking... pretty cool, i've never done IP over USB before.

anyway i am looking at /var/log/messages

is that the right place to look for clues as to why the update to 3.3 fails?

btw, this is the update file i am trying to use

Yes, I am able to successfully reboot, but that does not change anything.

also i just realized i also had the screensaver hack, which i never uninstalled. could that be causing the problem?

alban, so like they say on here, all directories are hidden from you when you mount over usb, except for /mnt/us.


when you plug in your kindle, just drop the jailbreak files in there, that is really /mnt/us although there will be no indication of that so for your intents and purpose, /mnt/us is the root dir.

ok, thanks for everyones help on this. so i've narrowed down the problem somewhat.


1) when i press the HOME button, everything seems OK on the Kindle and i go back to my book list, but in the error logs i get the fowllowing error:

2) when i try to go to the kindle store, i get this error. the log has been snipped and edited for what i think are relevant parts. It appears the error is related to an SSL cert? I am assuming this problem is related to why i cannot update my firmware. Does this problem have anything to do with the fact that since the jailbreak, my K0008 kindle mistakenly thinks its a 3G model on the Settings screen? The message that the kindle reports on screen to the user is the last line listed at the end of the debug file. But as you can see in the logs, my WAN is connected just fine, its some other problem.

does anyone have any idea from the logs above?

yifanlu --- you said to contact amazon. will amazon help you if you are not the original owner and its probably not under warranty? i was worried they give me a hard time since its been jailbroken?

matan --- i was hoping you might know something from these log files.


has anyone ever heard of amazon purposefully blacklisting a kindle similarly to the way does not allow jailbroken iphones to update?

yifanlu --- you said to contact amazon. will amazon help you if you are not the original owner and its probably not under warranty? i was worried they give me a hard time since its been jailbroken?

matan --- i was hoping you might know something from these log files.


has anyone ever heard of amazon purposefully blacklisting a kindle similarly to the way does not allow jailbroken iphones to update?
Amazon doesn't care about jailbreak. I've exchanged jailbroken kindles before. And from your first post

There's your problem. You should never edit OS files. Once you do, you can't update.

hi yifanlu, thanks for the reply and thanks for the jailbreaks!

So shouldn't i be able to just put it back in place? Or are you saying that because I changed the file in the past, even if the files are correct now, it is too late and Amazon actually has this Kindle flagged as previously failing a checksum?

i managed to find my notes, so i think i know what i modified and i am pretty sure i restored them from my backups:

1) /usr/bin/showlog -- but i backed it up first to showlog.orig

2) /opt/amazon/ebook/config/ServerConfig

Can you or anyone reading please confirm the dates and md5sum:

# ls -l ServerConfig.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 15118 Apr 2 2011 ServerConfig.conf

# md5sum ServerConfig.conf
4a5bb76ada7d1eda31080d6895ebd795 ServerConfig.conf


# ls -l showlog
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 7238 Apr 2 2011 showlog

hi again

so can anyone please give me the md5sums for the 2 files above or post their contents?

does anyone have any other ideas why i am broken?

i think i restored to factory conditons what i believe are the only 2 files i changed--- ServerConfig and showlog.

does amazon blacklist my machine if ServerConfig and showlog were *ever* changed in the past, such that even if they are put back the way they were i still get the errors posted in the log above? or is the problem somewhere else?

wait-- i just thought of one more thing--- could I have perhaps changed the root password and that is causing the above errors messages??

and the fact that i can't get into the amazon store nor update to 3.3??

so i can telnet in fine w/ no password, but i can see root has a crypted password in /etc/shadow and don't know if its supposed to, i would have thought it should be null there too.

whats the kindle 3.1 root password supposed to be so i can try setting it back to default?

a search turned both "fiona" or "luigi"

well, i just stumbled upon something great--- the kindle does in fact keep track of all the original files md5sums

/test/diags/factory/rootfs_md5_list

so i just verified that my showlog and ServerConfig are pristine.

so it is plausible that even if you restore to factory fresh, they can blacklist

however i am now even more suspecting that i must have changed my root password.

because my /etc/shadow md5 does not match what it should be

so my theory is, if i can just change my root password back to what amazon thinks it should be, or if somehow here could just post their /etc/shadow for 3.1, i will be good to go

EDIT-- OK. i am running a script now to check if indeed any other files have been changed....
