That's why we say that the real goal of DRM is to lock users into a particular company. |

Interesting philosophy. Locks can't achieve their stated goal either. Neither can bank vaults. I wonder what their real goals are.

More content provider propaganda taken in lock, stock and barrel. Fine drm your books as much as you want, and do not be surprised nobody buys them...

I've decided that epub is going to be another frigging mess. Digital Editions is going to foist another DRM scheme on us. Like we don't already have enough of them. And it won't be able to be broken once it's released. So I won't be purchasing any books in epub DRM format. Thank you Adobe for screwing us over yet again.

Don't panic yet... remember, Adobe isn't the only one who'll be selling books in ePub format. If they sell DRM'd ePub, don't buy them. If Digital Editions requires DRM'd ePub, don't use it. Buy the non-DRM'd ePubs from others, use something other than Digital Editions, and they'll get the message.

Without Mobipocket and Microsoft on board, epub is most likely DOA, or at best it will replace pdf's. I will be amazed if anything more comes out of it.

I assume, since you quoted me, that this is supposed to have something to do with what I wrote. But I'll be darned if I can figure out what it is. |

The tired comparison between drm and locks/bank vaults which is such a dear for anyone defending drm (heard it 3-4 times before at least, maybe more); leaving aside the insulting premise that anyone wanting drm-free books is equivalent to someone wanting free access to other people's house, money and so on, the bottom line is that drm in e-books has been soundly rejected by people voting with their wallets...

The difference between a bank vault and DRM is that cracking a single bank vault only cracks this specific bank vault not all bank vaults of the same manufacture. The loss is therefore limited. Not to mention that bank vaults usually carry big chunks of illegal money.
Also the robbers are usually caught reducing the loss further. Cracking a DRM scheme means all content under that DRM is free. |

JSWolf - If you don't want to buy DRM content don't buy it. Personally I think it's healthy to have competiton between mobipocket/Digital Editions/µbook. Last edited by andym; 09-16-2007 at 08:29 AM. |
