I also recommend Dan Simmons' Hyperion (and sequels).
And Vernor Vinge (Zones of thought, Rainbows end...).
Also Robert Charles Wilson (Spin)

Happy reading!

These are all older and possibly cheaper books to find, but are still great reads.

"Ringworld" by Arthur C Clark

"The Forever War" by Haldeman/Scalzi (won Hugo, Nebula, being turned into a movie)

"Gateway" by Frederick Pohl - first novel of the Heechee saga

Funny, the question is now: did he actually mean Niven's Ringworld, or was he thinking of Clarke's Rama, which sort of reminds me of a ringworld, if you look through it from the ends....

Check out Jack McDevitt, especially his early novels. IMO they are excellent science fiction, he reminds me sometimes of Arthur C. Clarke.

How on earth have we gotten this far into Sci-Fi recommendations without mentioning Andre Norton?

Norton specialized in blending science and fantasy. Her Witch World series starts out as sci-fi/adventure, and she's written a very interesting series about time traveling (Time Traders). Here's the first book free and DRM-free from Baen: http://www.baenebooks.com/p-429-time-traders.aspx
and the second book free from Gutenberg:
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/19651

There's also a whole bunch of other excellent free sci-fi of hers from Gutenberg.
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/7021

She also wrote a series about humanity dealing with a galactic empire by becoming mercenaries. Here's the first 2 books free and DRM-free from Baen: http://www.baenebooks.com/p-396-star-soldiers.aspx

How about Robin Hobbs, any of her series really, all wonderfully created, aand once you start you're in for the long haul !
Worth Wikiped'ing for her full info.
And of course Scott Lynch, the Gentlemen Bastard series - another good stonking read, and good for many a night in !
Good luck.
