Authors
With all the great books being converted, I became curious on the knowing more about the different authors. I began reviewing the Wikipedia entries for some and then decided that I wanted to carry these writeups on my reader. Using the Sony settings written on the Sony forum, I created a special setting for my Acrobat application and then printed the Wikipedia "article". I set the title properties to be the authors last name and then first name and the author to "Wikipedia". These files seem to be quite readable in Connect and my reader. The copyright section of Wikipedia leads me to believe that I have not voilated anything.
Based on recommendations, I have placed all currently collected authors in this first thread and included their contents. Contents for 070719 Alexandre Dumas.pdf Algeron Blackwood.pdf Carey Rockwell.pdf Charles Dickens.pdf Charlotte Bronte.pdf E E Smith.pdf Edgar Wallace.pdf Fyodor Dostoevsky.pdf G K Chesterton.pdf George Lewis Becke.pdf George MacDonald.pdf George Orwell.pdf H Irving Hancock.pdf Henry Rider Haggard.pdf James Hadley Chase.pdf Jane Austen.pdf John Buchan.pdf John Galsworthy.pdf John Kendrick Bangs.pdf Mary E Braddon.pdf R Austin Freeman.pdf Robert Michael Ballantyne.pdf Theodore Dreiser.pdf Victor Appleton.pdf Wilkie Collins.pdf William Hope Hodgson.pdf Zane Grey.pdf Contents for 070720 C J Cutcliffe Hyne.pdf D H Lawrence.pdf Ed Lacy.pdf Franz Kafka.pdf H L Mencken.pdf H P Lovecraft.pdf Harry Harrison.pdf Hugh Lofting.pdf James Fenimore Cooper.pdf Johnston McCulley.pdf Jonathan Latimer.pdf Joris-Karl Huysmans.pdf Kate Chopin.pdf Malcolm Jameson.pdf Otis Adelbert Kline.pdf Robert E Howard.pdf Rudyard Kipling.pdf Thomas Hardy.pdf Thomas Kempis.pdf Victor Hugo.pdf Contents for 070722 A Merritt.pdf Arthur Morrison.pdf Christopher Morley.pdf E Nesbit.pdf Edgar Allan Poe.pdf Emma Orczy.pdf Frederick Marryat.pdf H Beam Piper.pdf Herman Melville.pdf J McCullough.pdf Lucy Maud Montgomery.pdf Talbot Mundy.pdf W C Morrow.pdf William Morris.pdf Contents for 070726 Arthur Conan Doyle.pdf David Lindsay.pdf Francis Stevens.pdf Garrett P Serviss.pdf Henry W Longfellow.pdf Henryk Sienkiewicz.pdf Jack London.pdf James Stephens.pdf Mary Shelley.pdf Rafael Sabatini.pdf Robert Louis Stevenson.pdf Sax Rohmer.pdf Sherwood Anderson.pdf Tobias Smollett.pdf Contents for 070731 Agatha Christie.pdf Andrew Lang.pdf H G Wells.pdf Horace Walpole.pdf Jean Webster.pdf Jules Verne.pdf Leo Tolstoy.pdf Lew Wallace.pdf Lionel White.pdf Mark Twain.pdf S S Van Dine.pdf Stanley G Weinbaum.pdf Thea von Harbou.pdf Thomas Carlyle.pdf Thomas More.pdf Voltaire.pdf Contents for 070801 Ambrose Bierce.pdf Bram Stoker.pdf Clarence Darrow.pdf Daisy Ashford.pdf Earl Derr Biggers.pdf Edgar Rice Burroughs.pdf Edmund Clerihew Bentley.pdf Ellis Parker Butler.pdf Emily Bronte.pdf Geoffrey Chaucer.pdf Guy Boothby.pdf James Branch Cabell.pdf Miguel de Cervantes.pdf Robert Chambers.pdf Robert Erskine Childers.pdf Samuel Taylor Coleridge.pdf Vicente Blasco Ibanez.pdf Willa Cather.pdf William Thomas Beckford.pdf Contents for 070803 Charles Darwin.pdf Charles Elme Francatelli.pdf Charles Fort.pdf Clarence Day.pdf E M Forster.pdf Edgar Jepson.pdf Edgar Lee Masters.pdf Edward Bulwer-Lytton.pdf Edward Plunkett.pdf Emma Darcy.pdf Eric Rucker Eddison.pdf F Scott Fitzgerald.pdf George Eliot.pdf Honore de Balzac.pdf J Meade Falkner.pdf Jacques Futrelle.pdf John Charles Dent.pdf Jonathan Swift.pdf Joseph Conrad.pdf Maurice Leblanc.pdf Olaudah Equiano.pdf Ray Cummings.pdf Robert Frost.pdf Contents for 070804 Alain-Rene Lesage.pdf David Goodis.pdf Ernest William Hornung.pdf Grace F Knoche.pdf Henry James.pdf J M Barrie.pdf James Gunn.pdf James Hilton.pdf Jeffery Farnol.pdf Jerome K Jerome.pdf Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.pdf John Bunyan.pdf Kenneth Grahame.pdf Madame Guyon.pdf Samuel Johnson.pdf Sheridan Le Fanu.pdf W W Jacobs.pdf Washington Irving.pdf Contents for 070808 Allan Pinkerton.pdf Anthony Trollope.pdf Arnold Bennett.pdf Charles Willeford.pdf Edward Stratemeyer.pdf Emily Post.pdf Frank L Packard.pdf Frank Norris.pdf George Meredith.pdf Lewis Carroll.pdf Louisa May Alcott.pdf P G Wodehouse.pdf Philip Francis Nowlan.pdf Roy Rockwood.pdf Samuel Smiles.pdf Virginia Woolf.pdf Walter de la Mare.pdf William Shakespeare.pdf Contents for 070809 Achmed Abdullah.pdf Aesop.pdf Alfred Tennyson.pdf Booth Tarkington.pdf Charles Williams.pdf Emile Zola.pdf John Woolman.pdf Ludwig Wittgenstein.pdf Oscar Wilde.pdf T E Lawrence.pdf Wallace Wattles.pdf Xenophon.pdf Yann Martel.pdf Zitkala-Sa.pdf Contents for 070817 Cabeza de Vaca.pdf Edward FitzGerald.pdf Edward Streeter.pdf George Grossmith.pdf James Joyce.pdf Josephine Tey.pdf Madame de Lafayette.pdf Thorne Smith.pdf William Cobbett.pdf Contents for 070825 Jean-Paul Sartre.pdf Lady Charlotte Guest.pdf Lester del Rey.pdf M P Shiel.pdf Mary Mapes Dodge.pdf Peter Watts.pdf Samuel Adams.pdf Sinclair Lewis.pdf Sun Tzu.pdf T S Eliot.pdf Thomas W Hanshew.pdf Waldemar Bonsels.pdf Walt Whitman.pdf Contents for 070902 David Graham Phillips.pdf David Hume.pdf Elizabeth Gaskell.pdf Ernest Bramah.pdf Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.pdf James Hogg.pdf Johanna Spyri.pdf John Muir.pdf John Stuart Mill.pdf Karel Capek.pdf William Blake.pdf Last edited by jgs; 09-02-2007 at 10:57 AM. Very good idea - I too find it interesting to read about authors; some of them led quite fascinating lives (eg did you know that Dame Barbara Cartland, famed for being the "queen of romance novels", was an early aviation pioneer?).
Fine to copy stuff from Wikipedia as long as you credit it, as you have done. BTW, the word is "copyright", not "copywrite" - it refers to the right to control copying. Why create it as PDF, as a matter of interest? LRF is much more "user friendly". |

I chose PDF because it was the easiest way to get something that was readable. Creating an LRF file with the various tools available took more time and fiddling.
If there is a simpler way to go from a web page to LRF please let me know. I'll upload the other 26 author files that I have this evening after work. Jim |

As of last night (at work now) I would go the the Wiki author site, set to "Printable Version", and print to PDF using the PDF settings for "Sony" and page size for "Sony". Then I modify the properties slightly and I am done. After I have the Wiki author site this takes about 30 - 60 seconds to complete.

I meant to ask how you're making the LRF files -- it helps to know what way you're currently using before we try to suggest a better one.

I have used BookDesigner and RasterFarian. Libprs500 seems like it would work; however, I get a little confused using the command line interface.

OK, I tried the html2lrf with the attached results. I also included the PDF. I must still be doing something wrong as I prefer the PDF version.

Are you sure you even have the same HTML to start with? The LRF doesn't have the same content as the PDF. Can you give the URL and I'll see what can be done?

I did a save as HTML from FireFox on the same URL and then loaded it in BookDesigner using the "open with ..." command.
I did a bit better than the first effort although nowhere as nice as the PDF version posted. |

Wikipedia's HTML is god's own mess...I could write a profile for web2lrf that would clean it up first...but I lack the motivation.

A suggestion - it would be a lot easier for people to find them if you were to put all the attachments on the 1st message in the thread!
