Thanks Igorsk. From what I can tell, the touch panel looks to be independent
of the the LEDs. Can you confirm if the Epson display itself can be repositioned
ie. bypassing the LEDs? or is there an additional plate/panel for the LEDs?

I think the 700 is begging to be modded. Potential seems to be there.

This is exciting news, Igorsk! Great work!

How does the screen looks like without the touch-screen? Is it crisp and clear?

I believe the space between the touchscreen and e-ink (now occupied by the side-lights) is responsible for the lack of "crispness", is that the case?

If so, would it be possible to remove the side-lights and get the touch
screen closer to the e-ink screen?

Thanks for the info and keep it coming!

My main question would be related to the one on crispness -- is the eink display actually the same one as the 505 uses? When I shine a bright light on it or turn on the side lights, it really does look as if it is.

And from the appearance of the touch screen in the picture where it is flipped up out of the way, it's obvious to see the smoky appearance of the touch screen, which seems to be the main culprit in the different appearance between the 505 and the 700.

The touch screen is on top of a thick (3-4mm) plexiglass which conducts the light. The LEDs themselves are under the white-black-white rectangular frame around the screen which you can see on this photo. I don't think you can peel off the touch-sensitive film from the glass.

But if the white-blk-white frame is somehow removed, this would theoretically
bring the display up closer and against the Plexiglas, thus removing the space
to accommodate the LEDs. I think the million dollar question on everyone's mind
is, Can the LEDs be bypassed in favor of enhanced reading in lighting conditions
not previously favored? ie. "crispier text"

TIA

Exactly! I wouldn't mind not having the sidelights in exchange of crispier text...

Perhaps one could remove the leds....

As I've owned one of these for two days now, it gave me chills to see one being disassembled already.

Is it my imagination, or would you simply need to remove the back cover to replace the battery if necessary?

BTW, for me the LEDs are the main reason for choosing this model, so the notion of removing those is most unappealing.

about the battery.

no, the metal case is one solid piece of metal. it doesnt split, it has no seems. all the inards are stuffed in through the bottom (or the top)

the right sides plastic is just plastic, on the inside is just a Metal Wall under it

Ah. Sounds like replacing the battery would be a little like replacing one in an ipod Mini, which I did successfully a year ago.
