Kindle 3 froze during software update

Hi,
I own a Kindle 3G
Last Friday, I turned on my Kindle and it automatically started a software update. Unfortunately, my Kindle froze during the update and it's been unresponsive since. The only thing I see is the "Software Update" screen.

My Kindle is fully charged. I've tried hard resets many times but it doesn't do anything. When I plug it into my computer with my usb cable, my computer doesn't recognize it. I've tried it with a different usb cable, on different computers (Windows and Linux) and made sure it was plugged into a powered usb port. Nothing seems to work.

I've called Amazon and they will replace my Kindle. Before sending my Kindle back to Amazon, I would like to backup my private content but since none of my computers recognizes my Kindle, I'm kind of stuck. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix my kindle or have a solution on how I can access the contents of my Kindle.

Any help would be appreciated!

Sorry, but you can't. The Kindle is broken, so you won't be able to retrieve any data from the Kindle itself.

However, please note that your Amazon Books are stored to your account, so you can download them (including bookmarks/notes/locations) to your new Kindle. Items emailed to your Kindle can easily be found in your sent box, with the search feature. Unfortunately, you will have to hunt down books that you sideloaded yourself.
