All the DX needs is

At the risk of stating the obvious, I'd propose that all the Kindle DX needs, is to do whatever it takes to get lighter. As it is, it's half a pound lighter than the iPad and the same weight as the nookcolor, though it has a larger screen. If Wifi gets it lighter, do it. If you have to drop the keyboard and use a touch screen then do that. Whatever it takes.

It would be nice to have such things as Wifi, an SD card reader and a better PDF rendering engine, maybe they're essential, but if Amazon can get it lighter it will blow away the competition even in the tablet category where book readers and internet connectivity are merging.

All the DX needs is to be cheaper. I do not think it being lighter would blow the competition away. The way I see it is the DXG has no real competition at the moment. You can't compare it to a tablet because the only thing you can really do with it is read books. Now if Amazon does come out with competitively priced powerful tablet device perhaps it could blow the competition away.

The browser in the K3 isn't half bad over wifi. You wouldn't play Warcraft on it but it's okay for surfing.

You are 100 percent right about the price though.

The DX needs the 5 way navigator button mechanism like that used on the K3.

It needs a rubberized back cover so it can be set down without sliding to the floor.

Page turning buttons on the left side would be nice.

It needs better directory/collection structure so that if you have hundreds of books or documents you can organize them in ways that are more intuitive or allow faster access. Without that there's no point in adding SD card storage- it already holds more stuff than you'll want to try to access.

Reduce the size (why does it need such a wide bezel around the screen?) without reducing the screen size, or increase the screen size to 8 1/2" x 11" or A4 and eliminate problems with pdf rendering by making the screen match the pdf native size.

Allow some basic animation on the screen- great for some text books. I'm not talking movies here, just moving lines on graphs, etc.

Improve the labeling of keyboard buttons- I've seen reports of labels wearing off buttons. While we're at it make the buttons bigger and change the layout to something that makes sense since you can't actually type on the keyboard. Put the numbers on dedicated buttons like the K2 had.

Put the volume control buttons on the front of the device instead of on the side.

Add a dedicated jack from which power can be accessed for reading lights.

I'll think of a few more if you give me a few minutes.

DX really needs the K3 firmware especially for improved PDF support...
