Lusty Tales and Hot Sales: Romance E-Books Thrive

Nice of the New York Times to notice, but not exactly "news".

Two interesting aspects.

1) More romance novels means that there are more women reading eBooks, which has been a rather male-dominated field for its first run of about the last ten years. This did indeed begin to change when Amazon offered the Kindle but I'm waiting for the day when there are more female ebook readers than male.
Then eBooks have become mainstream.

2) eBooks are discreet: You might even read a hardcore porn novel during a bus ride and your neighbor wouldn't necessarily notice.
This is a privacy which might also attract more readers to consider eBooks. "What you always wanted to read in public but never dared to open".

I love reading my slashpervert fanfic in public. It makes me feel naughty. Teehee.

Seriously, though, I do love having what I read hidden from public view. I have eclectic tastes, and read everything from 'Emma' to 'Maximum Ride', with 'Harry Potter' and 'Joseph Andrews' in between. Most of it is in the romance/paranormal romance genre, though. Sherrilyn Kenyon is great for action with sex and a little romance thrown in. LOL

It's not conclusive by any means, but the last few folks I've seen using a reader on the subway have been women.

But meanwhile, given the enormous popularity of the romance genre, my offhand guess is that more women than men read, period.

I always hit the Home button on my Kindle before handing it over to someone to look. I don't want to shock anyone by accident.

I can confirm that they don't notice. Or at least, I've never gotten any visible reactions to my reading material on public transit. However, I have shifted to a smaller base font size because it occurred to me that some phrases were outside the range I was comfortable with people seeing at a glance over my shoulder.

Have you mentioned that to her? She'd be delighted to hear it!

She's in the process of getting all her fanfic converted to multiple ebook formats.

Anything that I read, I'll read in public and I don't care who's looking over my shoulder. If they don't like it, it's their problem, not mine.

But that's how I am.

Yes, I've been reading some Draco/Hermione fanfiction after not doing so for a few years... the authors certainly have grown up! lol. I didn't even know ff.net allowed explicit sex scenes XP

I think for mainstream romance, the authors I read don't have truly horrible covers, but I definitely read Harlequin/Silhouette at home before I got my K3.

On my Kindle, I use TextToSpeech while I work out. There are things that sound just fine in my head, but that are pretty corny or even embarrassing when they are announced to a room of strangers. Understand, this can just be normal text/dialogue. Mild romance or violence can sound like its more than it is when it is 'read' out-of-context to a room of strangers.

Then eBooks have become mainstream.
Ebooks have been dominated by female readers since day one.

Case in point, Fictionwise started out selling science fiction (which mainly appeals to men), but when they began to resell books by erotic romance publishers, that was when their sales skyrocketed.

E-reading on a dedicated device might have been male-dominated in the early days, but women have been purchasing ebooks in huge numbers since the beginning.

I'm not surprised at all.

Women read much more than men do. So much more that I wouldn't be surprised that even if a smaller proportion of women readers read ebooks than male readers, they would still outnumber male ebook readers.

It only makes sense that sellers would go after the largest market.

Look at BoB - they're almost entirely romance-focused now. (They sell other genres, but the vast majority of what they advertise is romance.)

Cold be that publishers of romance novels don't actually try to screw over their customers. Are you listening Agency 5 & Apple?

Yup. I get really paranoid reading e-smut in public places. It never fails, some busybody wants to know all about my "Kindle" (I have four ebook readers, and none is a Kindle).

There is so much romance literature produced that there's no point in putting DRM or high prices. The competition is really fierce there.
