Tom's Hardware PaperWhite review, worth your time.

Finally Tom's Hardware has a review on PaperWhite. I know, Tom's Hardware was much better years ago. This review is still quite informative and answers many questions.

It's basically just regurgitating Amazon's own information about the PW. What questions did it answer for you? The PW's been out for long enough now that I suspect there'll be nothing new there for any current owner.

Indeed. I was expecting some more in-depth analysis of the hardware.

Hm, I find this part interesting:

link: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ew,3323-3.html
Quote:
Interestingly, Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite lets you set the contrast on a five-point scale. This is a new feature unique to the company's e-book reader flagship. By default, the Paperwhite is set to the middle point, which we’re calling “normal contrast.” Notched up to “high contrast,” you’ll see a bigger difference between pure black and true while. However, this comes at the expense of the shades in between.
Where is this contrast setting on PW...?

There is no contrast setting. I just went and read it, I guess he's talking about the light?

That`s what I`d say, too, looking at my PW... But what did these guys review then? Could it be some firmware related thing?

There is a contrast setting when reading PDFs. It comes in handy sometimes [though I'm reading a PDF at the moment that is horrible and no amount of additional contrast helps].

^^ Ah, thanks, that might explain the confusion. I haven`t read any PDFs yet, and they didn`t mention it was a PDF-only option :/

Thumbs down

Anyone with internet access can have a blog or website. Many of the so-called tech sites review devices of which they have very little knowledge, even though they act like they are knowledgeable. This review is way late in coming and apparently was written by someone who is not well informed on Kindles.

I did notice the geek bias evident in this sentence, "For a long while, LCD-based tablets had the a big advantage over these devices based on their bright, vibrant, screens."

How about, "For a long while, e-ink ereaders had a big advantage over backlit devices based on the ability to read in brightly lit areas and sunlight."

One is a true as the other.

It's not just geek bias, it's young-person's-eyes bias. Their bright, vibrant, *painful* screens.

I might want a video screen to be "bright and vibrant", but I certainly don't want the page of a book to be.

Book? You think people actually buy Ipads and Fires to read books?

As the main purpose? Probably not. Do lots of people use them as ebook readers? Absolutely. My husband no longer has a dedicated Kindle, he reads on his iPad.
