Amazon? To Buy Dorchester Books

Saw this on Teleread

http://www.teleread.com/chris-meadow...er-dorchester/

Full story from Digital Book World (Richard Curtis of E-Reads) and press release here:

http://www.digitalbookworld.com/2012...o-outbid-them/

This is good news for all the Dorchester authors who haven't gotten paid; as part of the deal Amazon (or whoever buys them) is paying their back royalties owed.

The articles are saying Amazon could be outbid in the auction that is to take place on 8/28.

Good news for those authors and their readers.

Not necessarily, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.

Brian Keene (one of the uncompensated authors) http://horrordrive-in.com/smf/index....439#msg108439:

Quote:
Well, it won't really impact folks like myself, Bryan Smith, J.F. Gonzalez, or anybody else who already got their rights back and went on to sell their books elsewhere.

But, without having talked to anyone behind the scenes yet (because I'm still on vacation) my tentative gut feeling is that this is good for folks like Sarah Pinborough, Mary SanGiovanni, Rob Dunbar, or anyone else whose work Dorchester kept in print, refused to revert the rights for, or didn't pay for royalties owed. Those folks benefit here regardless of whether they choose rights reversion or they choose going with Amazon and allowing Amazon to pay back royalties.

However... there's the rub. "Payment of back royalties." I'm not commenting on that. Not yet. Not until I get a few things confirmed by at least three different sources (which is how I've approached every twist and turn in the Dorchester story that I've reported). It remains to be seen how far back Amazon is willing to cover in back royalties, and more importantly, WHOSE accounting and bookkeeping they'll use (because it's been said that Dorchester was under-reporting sales on the ledgers and royalty statements long before this crisis even began).

So... cautiously optimistic for the folks still impacted by this, but not ready to cheer just yet.

This aught to scare the BPHs poopless more than anything Amazon has done of late.

If Amazon makes things right with a lot of authors here, enabling reversion of rights to whomever feels they were wronged...then the BPHs could find themselves embroiled in hostile takovers orchestrated by their authors.

Well played.

I'd be happy for the authors, if it didn't mean the books will probably be exclusive to Amazon. I don't buy Kindle ebooks.

I've been enjoying - as Dorchester authors get their rights back - seeing the books show up DRM free on Smashwords.

Again, I'd reiterate Brian Keene's thoughts on the matter: http://www.briankeene.com/?p=11733
