Where do people spend their time online?

A graph presented at Compete shows the sites where people spend the most time. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a breakdown that shows where people spend their mobile time, but I'm sure one will eventually pop up.

MySpace is the champion. I wonder how long they will be able to hold that spot. And note that Google is only #5, but that's because the graph doesn't represent how often you use a site, but how much time spent there.

The other obvious anomoly is the absence of MobileRead.com. Surely it was a sampling error! ;-)

It's interesting to note the disparity between Yahoo and Google. I have to wonder if this is reflected in market captialization, (I'll check this, later), or if this is mere sample bias.

Also of note is the relatively low showing for YouTube. Intuitively, I would have guessed a higher percentage of time would be spent, there, because of the lengthy content. Obviously, time spent may not exactly equate to data downloaded.

I think Yahoo gets more time because of the nature of the portal. Lots of people spend time there reading news (well, Google is getting there now also), email, maps, mobile portal, Yahoo online sports broadcasts, Yahoo finance is popular, etc. My impression is that Google is a little more focused on search and email and maps, with only a recent push towards more online applications and news reading.

In my case it's MR at 90%. I surf on a phoneline, it's one of the quicker places to land on, and it's very entertaining!

I do my part -- I keep MR open on my browser all day long while I'm at work.

Makes quick checks for new posts simpler.

Remember, only 20% have ever read or purchased a book in the last year. Add to that that ebooks are still a bit smaller market than pbooks and you have your answer. They sampled the wrong people -- just like they do for television.

Sounds like we need a "MobileRead-Spy" soon, similar to the digg spy ...

Btw, among the top sites Compete listed, I only go to google, amazon and wikipedia regularly.

Same with me Alex.

A spy would be a great idea, marketing wise, you'd be able to give precise figures to your advertisers.

Since the MR site already monitors our presence by our IPs, it would be just a matter of adding statistical software features. Easy for me to say, I know nothing about it!

Nono, we wouldn't give out any information of our member, including IPs.

The spy feature, as in digg spy, is more a single ajax-powered page that continuously updates itself as new posts appear on digg.

What I meant is the amount of people and the time they spend on the site or the different forums.

ex: There a 108 people that spend between 16min and 190min on the 'X' reader forum and there is an average of 68 persons on MR at anytime.

These are figures that are uncompromising, privacy wise, and very significative for marketers. Just as the amount of Reads affixed next to a thread. BTW This number should be of the amount of people that read in the thread rather than the amount of times it was read; as there are repeat readers who come back.

I spend most of my online time here, and at the Drupal support site. After that probably comes Wikipedia, then BBC news, usually. I also regularly frequent Google (but not for long periods of time, due to its nature) and occasionally spend a chunk of time at Amazon or Powells, but I'm too poor to do that often. I used to spend a lot of time at the Second Life forum, but I haven't had time to play Second Life for a while, so that's dropped off my regular visit cycle. Same with wilddivine.com, which has forums for a biofeedback game I have, and tabletpcbuzz, which I was into for a while when I was trying to rig a tablet on the cheap. I guess sometimes I'm a bit fickle in my interests.

Oddly enough, I don't think I've ever been to FaceBook or MySpace, though maybe I've hit some pages on the latter because some authors and other businesses use it.
