However, that isn't the most polite greeting I've ever heard. It sounds as if the administrator is about to order me to leave the cave where I've been hiding. The most defensible word arrangement is probably, "Hello there, you!" Unfortunately, the tone is disturbingly flirtatious. It gives you the impression the speaker is going to try to tickle me under the chin. It sounds as if the original writer was really only attempting to say, "Hello, there!" /me thinks it's a worthy topic for a next contest... to find the funniest, most intriguing user titles to add to the list.

Damn, I was going to suggest switching to something politically neutral and reading-related like going by length of reading material like "this user's posts make a" short story, novella, novel, tome. Now it just seems boring.

Why does is it seem just boring? You can still make your suggestion and maybe the majority will like it. Or maybe not. Or you will like other suggestions better. Or not. But why do you see it so negative before it even started?

Because it isn't funny or intriguing.

I think I see what you mean, Sil_liS. You could still make it a little funny, though:
Sil_liS Output: Several Trilogies New_User Output: Three-Quarters of a Haiku Or simply: Professor Longwing Breezy Suspense Writer Tabula Kielbasa Lazy Aphorist Veteran Aryan* Jack of All Trades, Master of Half a Noun Disappearing Tract Blackboard Diarist ================ * (Looks a bit too Klan-friendly until you notice it sounds like veterinarian.) How would authors would like non-authors being credited as having created literary works, and how would they feel about being known as Lazy Aphorists? It mght be better if we move away from that idea and simply focus on more traditional but humorous User Titles.

I hasten (puff, wheeze) to point out that my post was a joke intended for Sil_liS's amusement. Having bleated that, I should also add that people on a less international board might be disinclined to misinterpret the humor because the tone and usage would be apparent. Besides, the insults would evolve into compliments as members' post counts increased. On the nether hind, it isn't always a good idea for a public forum to lead with a playfully insulting tone, since the insults tend to ramp up and become aggressive. Mobile Read doesn't seem to be the right place for that. We're the UN of literacy. A football forum would be a better place, since members are supposed to take lumps like men (even if they're women, hermaphrodites or eunuchs), and temporarily insulting titles for new members on an RPG board would make a wry comment on the progress of the games under discussion. §§§§§§§ Off-Topic: Does anyone else find the term new age annoying because it's an oxymoron? Heckler: No, Presti, I find the term annoying because it's used by oxymorons! [Sound of heckler getting buried under a pile-up of manly football forum members] Last edited by Prestidigitweeze; 10-06-2012 at 06:56 PM. |
