New Novel - Prairie Hill

Hello everyone,

My name is Fred Burwell and I've just published a new novel, Prairie Hill. Thank you for taking a look.

In 1980, a troubled young stranger arrives in Prairie Hill, a small Wisconsin city. Jimmy Lathrop would like nothing better than to go about his business washing dishes at the popular local eatery, the Pullet Surprize. A fresh start. No questions asked. Then he begins moonlighting as the feathered mascot of the local minor league baseball team and meets someone who will change his life.

Jenny Diggles bides her time serving the locals at the Pullet Surprize, struggling to come to terms with her lonely, eccentric mother, Lila. Should she chuck it all and marry Lance Kilgore, the ambitious general manager of the Cobb Kernels baseball team? Jenny’s passion for prairies and heirloom plants as well as her deepening friendship with Jimmy Lathrop lead to self-discovery.

With its atmospheric backdrop of threatened tall grass prairie and a soon to be abandoned historic baseball stadium and through its cast of colorful, quirky characters, Prairie Hill explores themes of redemption and love.

Prairie Hill is available at Amazon.com:
www.amazon.com/dp/B006UVQ1UQ

And at Barnes and Noble:

About me: I was born into a family of readers and I gobbled up books from an early age. My father Basil Burwell loved wordplay and storytelling and published novels and poetry. I grew up in Norwalk, Connecticut and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and remember trailing after my parents through the nooks and crannies of second hand bookstores and the crowded booths of flea markets in search of paper treasure. I became interested in writing when I was ten years old, started keeping a diary that I still write, and began creating my own tales. After college in Vermont and Wisconsin, I followed my interest in editing and served as Associate Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Beloit Fiction Journal and as publisher and editor of Acorn Whistle magazine. I’ve published short fiction and non-fiction on a variety of topics, including baseball, rock ‘n’ roll and American history. I live with my wife and son in Beloit, Wisconsin.

Hello everyone,

I've had a very nice response to Prairie Hill's cover photograph of pasque flowers, taken by Rob Baller. Today I posted several more of Rob's beautiful prairie photos on my website: http://fredburwell.com. My first sight of pasque flowers blooming at a remnant prairie many years ago later provided inspiration for an early scene in Prairie Hill.

Best,
Fred

Hello again,

Lately I've been thinking about writers and teachers who influenced me. I just posted a tribute to my father, Basil Burwell, who published novels and books of poetry. He was a wonderful teacher and storyteller with a marvelous sense of humor and very much an influence on my novel, Prairie Hill. Here's a link to the article: http://fredburwell.com/2012/02/23/a-...basil-burwell/

Thank you in advance for taking a look and for your ongoing support of Prairie Hill.

Best,
Fred

Hello again,

A plot thread in Prairie Hill deals with the potential destruction of one of the few remaining stands of tallgrass prairie. I took a walk the other day and discovered that the same sort of threat is happening within a few steps of my house. I went home and wrote the following piece:

Thank you for taking a look.

Hello again,

I've just posted an article on my blog which explores the sources of fiction. I compare the "voice" used for a character in my novel Prairie Hill, to dialogue captured in one of my journals some 20 years ago. Although Prairie Hill is not an autobiographical novel, I can identify many places where some aspect of "real life" experience transformed into fiction. I thought that MobileRead readers and writers might find the piece interesting. Here's a link:

Thank you for taking a look.

Best,
Fred

Prairie Hill (novel) Free on Amazon.com 10/25 and 10/26 2012

Hello everyone,

My novel, Prairie Hill, is available free on Amazon.com and its international sites today and tomorrow. Prairie Hill is a warmhearted and romantic novel set in the Midwest. There are no vampires, no zombies, no murders or evil extra-terrestrial beings. Well-rounded characters struggle to come to terms with difficult situations, learn from each other, and help each other via compassion and love. That said, Prairie Hill is not a sentimental novel, but will appeal to those who enjoy realistic fiction featuring likeable characters and a vivid setting well worth visiting. Thank you for taking a look.

In the U.S.

In the U.K.
