This actually makes me a bit nervous about the future of our computing devices. The last thing I want is to be forced to choose between locked ecosystems. Yet even Microsoft is going in that direction. I hope they all fail.

If they all fail, there will be less toys for us. Hope they all succeed so we can price and feature shop.

People already are choosing the iPad over all other tablets, including the Fire. There is no Amazon phone so theorizing about its effect on the marketplace is idle speculation. And despite the exaggerated rumours of a closed platform, Amazon customers can access all their movies, books, and music on iOS devices using the Kindle, Instant Video, and Cloud Player apps. So there really is no dilemma.

If they all succeed, you will only shop by price and features once. After that you will shop by whatever ecosystem you originally chose. |

You are right that anything could happen, but that doesn't make it likely.
Apple has an interest in making its ecosystem as attractive as possible, even if that means opening itself up to competing services. Its rivals have an enormous interest in making sure their products and services are available on iOS, so long as Apple continues to create the most successful phones and tablets on the market and its users continue to spend more money than the average consumer. I don't see either of those reasons changing very soon. Last edited by holymadness; 12-21-2012 at 11:57 AM. |

Problems in your post:
1. You linked to Business Insider, a worthless gossip rag that trades in linkbait headlines to generate page views. 2. You referenced speculation about an event that did not actually take place. I hope you can see why this is a less than credible prop for your argument. |

If you want further information, I'd suggest looking it up yourself. It's not hard to find. Then you can offer a dispute based on facts instead of assumptions. |

Afraid not.
"Apple is going to force Amazon to offer users the option of buying the book in the Kindle app." This never happened. Thus the premise of the article falls apart. |

Depends on our definition of what the event is doesn't it? But that's beside the point. There is more than enough evidence available in that article and elsewhere to support my position that it is foolish to assume Amazon and Apple will always support some level of openness between them.

Apple wants to control it's users and sell them content from it's own stores to it's own devices exclusively. There is no iBook app for Android and there never will be unless Apple completely changes its business model. If this Amazon phone is real it will be linked in with the Amazon ecosystem as another means of selling content. And like the other devices will be sold at minimal cost. 1. You post incorrect information to support your point 2. That information is shown to be incorrect 3. You reply that it "depends on our definition" of what happened, and that it is besides the point anyway. Okay then. |
