m92 white first impression and question
i just got my white m92 this morning and my first impression is that it's not stellar. sorry. it's fast enough, but the screen refresh gets annoying unless you set the rate to "always" as opposed to the next best thing, which is every 3 screen changes. and it goes down hill from there.
the "home" button doesn't actually take you to the home screen, but brings up a contextual menu. is there a way to get back to the home screen quickly? the only way i know to get back to the home screen is to keep hitting the "back" button all the way to the home screen. and my firmware version is 1.8 20121224. is there a more up-to-date firmware? thanks. |

For Arta Tech models sold in US, there is a newer firmware, but my M92 could not detect it:

thanks for the link. but i think that the files are source code and not the actual firmware update executables.

thanks frank0736 and mono.
but when i tried to unzip on a win xp machine (using standard zip that comes with win xp or 7-zip) it asks for a password for grep. i had this problem before with a file that has an illegal character in the file name, such as a quotation mark. is this the case, or do i actually need a password to unzip it? |

You don't need to unzip the file. Put the zip in the SD card and the follow the steps to upgrade the firmware

thanks all, for the help. i did the update and the version number still says 1.8 20121224. i placed the zip file on the root directory of the sd card and inserted the card into the reader. with the m92 off, i pressed on the joy stick while pressing the power button. it brief flashed and then remained blank for a few minutes, after which it started up. sounds about right? but the version number is still the same. could it be that the update-20130315.zip file should be dated 20121224?

rem736, you probably have the same problem that I have.
After you press joystick and switch on your M92, you should see lines like "update request detected ... checking updates", then if things go right, it should turns into "updating..." and that is the actual updating process which should take minutes. However, on my machine, no "updating..." thing shows up, i.e., the machine did not detect the firmware zip file. Instead, my machine rebooted soon into the default system, and the firmware is still 1.8 201212.. I believe that might be what happened to you. But in your case, the detecting took "a few minutes" while in my case it took only about ten seconds before rebooting. What are shown at the bottom of your screen when you flash the firmware? I tried a 16gb Transcend sd card. I also checked the md5 of the zip file and check for errors on the sd card and everything looks fine. The firmware just did not get detected. Hope my case is helpful. PS: Do anyone know anyone who is working for onyxboox.com or Arta Tech to explain this? |

i just got a blank screen...no message of any kind. so i guess it did not actually update. i'm new to this brand, so i don't know anyone. i'll try to contact arta tech, however, as i purchased the device from them thru amazon. i'll let you know if i hear anything.

one last thing. i searched all over, but could not find a silicone skin made for the m92. in fact, the only cover accessory i found is the boox branded leather cover. i would rather not use such a cover to keep the weight down.
has anyone found a silicone skin made for it? anywhere? |

So far I haven't seen a silicon case. Actually I think the leather case makes good sense b/c E-ink screens are more fragile than usual LCDs. The brown case sold in Amazon, Passion of Book, appears better than the standard case (black).
PS: I also purchase through Amazon. I already contacted sales@onyxboox.com regarding updates and warranty. A representative called Gera kindly responded to my email with the firmware link you posted, which, unfortunately, does not work on my M92. Anyway, I do hope Arta Tech guys, either in US or in Poland, can catch up with other distributor like booxtor in developing. Actually, I do not quite understand why the extra work on TTS and cloud service takes more than two months (so far). |

There is also a monster wood case available from a reseller in China. But how to buy and ship it is a question.
Link (in Chinese): http://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?spm...d=23364004586& Looks sturdy but definitely too big and thick: Last edited by frank0734; 03-22-2013 at 09:14 PM. |

thanks, but i already have a leather sleeve that i can put the m92 in while transporting it. so protection is not an issue. it's when i take it out of the sleeve and use it that i want it to be light in weight.
for my existing sony prs-950, i use this system as well. i have a black silicon cover for the "silver" prs-950, and during transport, it lives in a book armour zippered case. by the way, i found out a possible reason for the firmware update to not work. it seems that where the m92 is purchased is a factor: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=181463 message #2 it seems that there are licensing agreements to be honored, and that only arta tech can issue any firmware updates. |

Hey rem736, it is true that firmware depends on the model.
There are two types of M92: one from ArtaTech, which has Ivona TTS and cloud service, the other is, well, non-ArtaTech model. I believe onyxboox.com sells through Amazon and they sell ArtaTech model. So, the one you bought through Amazon, is probably an ArtaTech one. I also bought through Amazon, so we should have the same model. The only thing so far we can do appears to be waiting for the reply from onyxboox.com, which is unfortunate. Last edited by frank0734; 03-22-2013 at 10:52 PM. |
