Apple to Build Manufacturing Plant in Arizona
If you've fumed over Apple's partnership with the notorious Chinese-worker-exploitative company, Foxconn, then fume slightly less: Apple has shifted its supply chain from FC to Pegatron and is now building a manufacturing plant in Good Olde Arizona which will specialize in sapphire glass.

It will create 700 manufacturing jobs and 1300 construction jobs. I imagine they threw out the 2,000 number to match Motorola's Texas workforce.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...9A401I20131105 I'm not an Apple fan, and this is not at the level of what Motorola has done in Texas, but regardless it's nice to see. |

Great news. I am thrilled to see that companies are returning to the US. I hope that the same can be said for Europe.
Now for the wave of people and reports who are going to say that they are not paying $30 an hour but $10 an hour like we have seen when other manufacturing has returned to the US. Note: Many of the foreign owned companies started to manufacture in the US after NAFTA because they could avoid paying certain tariffs making it affordable to build in the US. While Apples move is not NAFTA related, I would put good money on the reason being that the cost to build in China and ship to the US is about the same as building in US now and so it is a good PR move. |

This is a sapphire crystal factory. Which I assume will mean they will make the parts here, ship them to China, then ship the completed devices out from there.

Didn't Apple open a factory in the US that will sell a computer made here? It could be supplying that factory as well.

Gee
Apple (and many others) used to make product right here in the Silicon Valley. Then everyone move manufacturing out of California to avoid high taxes and heavy handed regulation. Go Arizona (a right to work state) |

If true, this would be a blow to the economies of both China and Taiwan, and thus would be reported in the New York Times and Washington Post. Until it is, I don't believe it.

Foxconn has something like 3-400000 workers if apple can replace them with 2000 workers it would be mind boggling. Apple move away from Foxconn has less to do with worker exploitation and more to do with Foxconn plans on becoming a direct device seller like Samsung and becoming Apples direct competitor.
