Need Suggestions for Bedtime Reading for 11-yr old Girl
My almost 11 year old daughter is now reading the fifth Harry Potter book. She reads just before bed and the suspense in the story is causing anxiety and she isn't sleeping well. She would like something lighter to read before bed and she will continue with the Harry Potter during the day. I will take her to the bookstore tonight and would love some suggestions. The Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden series that I liked as a kid may create the same anxiety issues and she said she doesn't like mysteries (although she hasn't read any that I'm aware of). What else can I point her towards that would challenge her reading level with quality as well as coziness?

The Little House books are a great idea, thanks! Being Canadian, I'm sure she'll read Anne of Green Gables in school, but I'll suggest them to her. I'll add that she has read and liked Roald Dahl's children's books and Island of the Blue Dolphins.

I do seem to remember some suspense in Nancy Drew at the climax, but it's been a while. Is Nancy ever in danger from the suspect?

Thanks Gazella, that list is perfect. She did enjoy Charlotte's Web.
Owly, we won't make it to the library before it closes, and she has a gift card to the bookstore. Sometimes the staff is wonderful, but I thought I'd do some checking first. |

The Narnia books should also be quite good reading at that age.

Have Spacesuit will travel, by Robert A. Heinlein.
One of the leads is an 11-year girl genius. She gives the protagonist/hero fits. Helps save the human race. There is a movie in production since 2010, apparently for this year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Have_Sp...%94Will_Travel |

Enola Holmes series is very good. Skullduggery pleasant and Artemis Fowl are good fantasy books for 11 year old. You would enjoy these too maybe. I think are all at libraries.
