E-Book Open Error

OK, I'm so confused...

I have an Amazon acct for my daughter's Kindle.

I downloaded a book and tried to open it to read in Calibre. I didn't want to download the Kindle Viewer on my work PC... long story.

Anyways, when I tried to open it, it said that it was DRM protected and couldn't open it! Now, it's MY book! I downloaded it/bought it from Amazon on my CC!

What the...?? Can anyone help me?!

Welcome to the darkside of DRM.

You have a choice before you:
1) Learn more than you ever wanted about plugins, drm and Apprentice Alf

2) Give up and let amazon control your every move

Amazon use DRM to lock a downloaded book to a specific device. Unless you want to get into the (murky) areas of DRM removal you will have to live with that restriction.

You can just go to "Manage your Kindle" in your account at Amazon to have it sent to a different device on the same account. I read most books on Kindle but some I prefer to read on Kindle for PC. If I change my mind about which device I want to use, I just change it and redownload it at Amazon. At least that's how it works for me.

Find the book in your list (at MYK) and click the dropdown box at the right side.
