Free audiobook - Arthur and George by Julian Barnes [Sherlock Holmes-related Fiction]
To close out UK newspaper The Guardian's "Books Season" month, they are in conjunction with AudioGO (a division of the BBC) offering a free download of award-winning novelist Julian Barnes' Arthur and George in MP3 format.
Description Julian Barnes's Man Booker Prize-shortlisted novel is based on Arthur Conan Doyle's extraordinary real-life fight for justice. Arthur and George is based on the true story of two men. One is Arthur Conan Doyle, the other is George Edaji, a solicitor from Birmingham. Their 19th-century lives are worlds and miles apart, until a series of shocking events brings them together. Here's a bit on Wikipedia with a little more on the story behind the story, if you're interested. This will be available to get from Oct 30 to Nov 8, UK time via the announcement page on The Guardian's website, where you'll have to fill in a bit of info and you'll wind up with a coupon code to enter in the AudioGO cart. Technically, this is restricted to UK and Republic of Ireland people over 18 years of age, but it worked fine for me as a Canadian (and I didn't even have to lie about that). You do not have to download the files immediately, and in fact you will be doing AudioGO a significant favour if you wait probably a week or two because people are likely to be hammering their servers again with the demand, just as with the previous batch of Guardian freebies. The book will stay in your AudioGO account for ages to come, so there's no need to rush unless you really and truly need to listen to it Right Now. AudioGO also look to have some decent 50% off sales on selected MP3 audiobook downloads (and what looks like 20-40% off corresponding CDs) by popular and "modern classic" authors such as Ngaio Marsh, PD James, and Lindsey Davis (as well as BBC stuff like Doctor Who) on their Special Offers page, which you might like to check out. Many of their books are available worldwide, and the site is not limited to selling to UK/ROI residents. If you like BBC Radio dramas and comedy shows, this is a good way to get legal copies of them. Happy listening! |
