However, I'm very disconcerted to find that - in the very first sentence - the author (?) didn't include a singular possessive on 'mothers bedroom.'

But...this is a first person narrative, so maybe the 'writer' [protagonist] is grammatically challenged.

ADDED: I see this is purposefully being done in this one phrase, since I've read about 5 pages so far, and it's recurring without the possessive.

Probably used a special character version of it in Word, then it was stripped out when converting to an ebook version.

It begins in the most boring place in the world: Chickentown, U.S.A. There lives Candy Quackenbush, her heart bursting for some clue as to what her future might hold.

When the answer comes, it's not one she expects.

Welcome to the Abarat.

$2.99 from Severed Press: To The Death by Wrath James White.

Quote:
In a village in Uganda, The Lord's Revolutionary Militia has raised an army of "dead ones", tens of thousands of voracious living corpses. With them, General Joseph Nwosu intends to take over all of Uganda.

In San Francisco, Detective Elgin Washington finds the body of former MMA legend, Hollister McCoy, in a dumpster. His body is badly decayed and covered in an unidentified purple fungus. His neck is broken and there is a gunshot wound in his forehead. Both wounds were delivered postmortem and there is evidence that Hollister's brain was still active at the time, several days after the rest of his body had begun to decompose.

Agent Emmanuel Stern was with the ranger squad in Uganda when they were overrun by hundreds of the living dead. He barely escaped with his life. Days later, while preparing to return to Uganda amid reports that a local warlord was using the fungus to create an undead army, Agent Stern receives word that a corpse has turned up in America, in a major city, covered in an unknown purple fungus.

MMA fighter, Tyler Pope, is a rising star in a new underground fight promotion,"The Terror Combat League" , battling undead former martial-arts icons. One day he is offered the fight of a lifetime, one million dollars to fight Lester Broad, the former World Heavyweight Champion, a two-hundred-and-eighty-pound monster who knows no fear, feels no pain, and has only one drive... hunger! Now, he must try to defeat this massive living corpse and claim the prize money while avoiding the CIA and the San Francisco police who are intent on stopping the zombie-creating fungus from entering the general population.

But Queenie did not want to die, and she will do anything to live again…including possessing young Rowan. She haunts the child’s nightmares, taking her over bit by chilling bit. Free from Raw Dog Screaming Press: The Devil and Preston Black (Murder Ballads and Whiskey) by Jason Jack Miller.

Quote:
Preston Black has a nasty habit of falling in love with the wrong type of woman. But girls who don't play nice are the least of his problems. This handsome bar band guitarist isn't washed-up, but he's about to be. He's broke, he's tired of playing covers and he's obsessed with the Curse of 27.

He's about to add 'deal with the devil' to his list.

Lucky for Preston, he has help. Like the angelic beauty who picks him up when he's down. And the university professor who helps him sort through old Appalachian hexes and curses to find the song that may be his only shot at redemption. And when things get real bad, he has the ghost of John Lennon to remind him that "nothing is real."

Let Raw Dog Screaming Press author Jason Jack Miller take you to a place where love is forever even when death isn't, where magic doesn't have to be seen to be believed, where a song might be the only thing that saves your soul.

MURDER BALLADS AND WHISKEY is a unique blend of dark fiction, urban fantasy and horror. It's Appalachian Gothic, Alt.Magical.Realism, Hillbilly Horror. It's AMERICAN GODS meets JUSTIFIED. TRUE BLOOD with witches. It's Johnny Cash with a fistful of copperheads singing the devil right back to hell.

Free short story from Evil Jester: Dinin' by Ty Schwamberger.

Quote:
On their way to Las Vegas for a weekend of debauchery; Dawn, Cindy and Morgan decide to stop at a greasy spoon to get some grub. Mel's Diner looks like a decent enough place and their advertised 'best burgers this side of Vegas' entice the girls to give it a try. While at the diner; they eat, make fun of the restaurant's patrons and finish the meal off by doing the most sacrilegious thing a customer can do - skip out on their bill.

What ensues is a large truck with its headlights off following them along a deserted stretch of road, a blinding light that causes them to almost wreck, a few shotgun blasts, a long walk down a dark road and some horrific events that unfold inside a cabin deep in the woods. Is it the diner's owner coming to collect on girl's tab or someone with more than just money on their mind? What do they want? What is the driver of the truck willing to do once they come to an abrupt stop on the side of the road?

The three college friends will find out soon enough.
Blood Society by Jeffrey Thomas is $1.99 from Necro.

Quote:
On the holiday Sicilians call Giorno dei Morti — "The Day of the Dead" — Attilio Augusta meets a beautiful woman while paying his respects in a crypt. She is the same woman he once met in that crypt as a young boy. She hasn't aged a day.

Soon Attilio is making love with this woman.

Soon, he is fighting to save himself from the jaws of a ravenous monster.

In Chicago, crime lord Alphonse Capone is introduced to a new mobster in town. A man who, unthinkably, demands a share of Capone's empire. A man who was once called Attilio Augusta. A man who is no longer merely human.

Blood Society follows the career of an undying mafioso from Chicago in the 1920s to Boston in the 1990s. Along his blood-splattered path he will face traitorous comrades, a dangerously obsessed priest, the same volatile woman who turned him so many years before, and ultimately an enemy band of gangsters who are beings like himself…

Beings that cross at will into a mysterious alternate world. Beings that transform into hideous creatures impervious to bullets, knives and bombs…

Creatures with a thirst for money, power and…blood.

Blood Society is an epic supernatural horror novel by Jeffrey Thomas, author of the cult classics Letters From Hades and Punktown.

Free from Medallion Press: Floating Staircase by Ronald Malfi.

Quote:
Following the success of his latest novel, Travis Glasgow and his wife Jodie buy their first house in the seemingly idyllic western Maryland town of Westlake. At first, everything is picture perfect—from the beautiful lake behind the house to the rebirth of the friendship between Travis and his brother, Adam, who lives nearby. Travis also begins to overcome the darkness of his childhood and the guilt he’s harbored since his younger brother’s death—a tragic drowning veiled in mystery that has plagued Travis since he was 13. Soon, though, the new house begins to lose its allure. Strange noises wake Travis at night, and his dreams are plagued by ghosts. Barely glimpsed shapes flit through the darkened hallways, but strangest of all is the bizarre set of wooden stairs that rises cryptically out of the lake behind the house. Travis becomes drawn to the structure, but the more he investigates, the more he uncovers the house’s violent and tragic past, and the more he learns that some secrets cannot be buried forever.

Free from Endeavor Press: Prospero's Mirror by A.N. Donaldson.

Quote:
What is read cannot be unread.'

Oxford, 1935.

An exhausted nation is recovering from one Great War...and girding itself for the next one.

MR James, Britain's greatest writer of ghost stories, is summoned by the Warden of Old College to examine an ancient stone mirror.

But he soon finds himself drawn into a dark maze of secrets, including one from his own guilty past.

Oxford 1665.

At a time when established orthodoxies are being challenged by the new science, Warden Woodward of Old College acquired the same mirror. He soon suspects conspiracy and witchcraft in a city besieged by plague.

Assailed by devastating visitors, caught between fears of an ancient curse and the World Wars of the future, two men from different centuries are forced to delve into a dreadful secret and confront their own demons.

But is self-reflection the most dangerous thing of all?

And are there some books that can kill?

"Prospero's Mirror," by A.N. Donaldson sounds wonderful. Now in calibre.

(Already owned the Malfi title.)

Thank you!
