Amazon selling book without DRM? (Eisler's The Detachment)

Hello,

I bought Wednesday's Amazon.de Deal of the Day (Barry Eisler's The Detachment). As far as I can tell the AZW is not encrypted. - fbreader can open it (after renaming the file to prc). Recent Calibre's ebook-viewer (0.8.28) is also able to display the book.

Older versions of calibre (0.7.7) fail with:

Did Amazon accidentally forget adding DRM? Or is it common to get books without?

Amazon have always sold DRM-free books. It's entirely the option of the publisher whether or not a book has DRM.

Barry Eisler is from the JA Konrath school of self publishing, were DRM restrictions are pointless and counter productive. So I would only be surprised if the book you bought was one of his older ones that he gave away control over.

In English, yet another author screws over readers who do not buy eBooks from Amazon.

I just came across an interesting interview with Eisler in which he does say he's personally against DRM.

I agree with him on some points here, not all:

I don't understand--it's got no DRM and should be easy to convert via Calibre.

Or is this an "I don't want any of my money going to Amazon even if this book *doesn't* have DRM" thing? Because if you want them to behave better, and discarding DRM counts as behaving better, wouldn't it make sense to reward good behavior?

I wonder if I would like this book...
