Murder at the Altar is the first in Veronica Heley's Ellie Quicke series. It's free right now at Kindle US and UK. Originally published by HarperCollins, now by Joffe.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJ314XWK
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CJ314XWK

Spoiler:
Quote:
Meet Ellie Quicke. Devoted cat lady, tea addict, recent widow — and now amateur sleuth!

Everyone in leafy Ealing knows her as the dotty old dear who volunteers at the local charity shop. But there’s more to Ellie than meets the eye . . .

Two days after her husband’s funeral, Ellie can’t bring herself to leave the house. But trouble soon comes knocking — in the shape of hysterical flower arranger Mrs Dawes.

She’s stumbled on a dead body in church.

Now it’s up to Ellie to help the police before the killer strikes again.

Meet your next favourite sleuth in this wonderfully witty whodunnit.

A mostly different batch of titles in this series are $2.99 each right now. A few from the previous group are still on sale, but there are also a number of new ones on sale. And still not on sale at Kobo US. The link for the series page below is still good.

Nine titles is too many for me to type out and do all the links, but here's a link to the series webpage: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086WFFPCM...kindle_edition

And then when I was checking Kindle UK for this, just for fun, I noticed that Murder in Williamstown, which is the twenty-second and most recent book (2023), is on sale in the UK for £0.99, probably just for today.

Rituals is the eighth in the Faye Longchamp series by Mary Anna Evans. It's on sale for $2.99 at Kindle US and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VQM4CJB
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/rituals-36

Spoiler:
Quote:
Faye Longchamp doesn't believe in ghosts, but she's an archaeologist—dead people are her life. While working in Rosebower, a rural New York town founded by Spiritualists, Faye is surrounded by people who talk to the dead on a regular basis. So when influential Spiritualist Tilda Armistead invites Faye and her daughter to commune with the dead, she can't say no. An hour after Tilda's crystal ball shows Faye things no rational mind can explain, Tilda is dead. The evidence says someone trapped Tilda in a small room, nailing its one door shut before setting her house afire. There is no possible way for her to have escaped the blaze, let alone drive for miles before finding Faye and dying in her arms. Yet Tilda did. How? And why?

Anywhere else, these people would be dismissed as crazy. But in Rosebower, "normal" is relative. As Faye watches psychics and charlatans jockey for power, Tilda's sister, Myrna, is slowly dying. Will Rosebower reveal its secrets before more goes up in flames?

The Typhoon Lover is the eighth in the Sujata Massey's Rei Shimura series. It's on sale for $1.99 right now in the US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000W965Y4
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-typhoon-lover

Spoiler:
Quote:
A young woman with a foothold in two cultures, Rei Shimura has gone wherever fortune and her unruly passions have led her throughout her chaotic twenties. Now, after the streamers for her thirtieth birthday celebration have been taken down, the Japanese-American antiques dealer and part-time sleuth finds herself with an assignment to find and authenticate an ancient Middle Eastern pitcher that disappeared from Iraq's national museum.

The piece is believed to be in the hands of a wealthy Japanese collector, whose passion for beauty extends to Rei herself. But when a devastating typhoon hits Tokyo, Rei is trapped with the object of her investigation—and with much much more than the fate of an ancient pitcher at risk.

Joan Wolf is one of my favorite Regency romance authors, but she also wrote two medieval mysteries many years ago. Now both are on sale for $1.99 in the US, and discountable at Kobo. There are definitely romance elements in them, but I think of them more as mysteries, and SYKM lists them, so I'm posting here. I enjoyed both, and wish she had written more...

Impulse is a non-series title by Frederick Ramsay. It's $1.99 right now in the US, and couponable at Kobo US...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VQLWGK3
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/impulse-83

Spoiler:
Quote:
Frank Smith, famed writer of murder mysteries, boards Southwest Airlines heading from Phoenix to Baltimore. His goal is his 50th class reunion at Scott Academy, but behind him he leaves the highly suspicious disappearance of his wife into apparent thin air four years ago and the relentless quest of Officer Ledezma whose impulse is that Smith has killed her and buried the body. But another mystery awaits Frank at Scott—a mystery 25 years old.

A group of young boys walked from the campus into the woods and disappeared. What could have happened to them? Who better than he to probe the mystery? In doing so, he not only relives his own boyhood when his father was the upright head of Scott's English Department, but that of the classmates of the missing boys, some of whom are back at Scott now for their 25th.

Warm yet suspenseful, rich with a floodtide of emotions and packed with little nuggets of pure gold characterizations, Ramsay explores the role of Impulse.

Rocket to the Morgue by Anthony Boucher is $1 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US.

What a great title.

Quote:
Legendary science fiction author Fowler Foulkes may be dead, but his creation, the iconic Dr. Derringer, lives on in popular culture. Or, at least, the character would live on if not for Foulkes’s predatory and greedy heir Hilary, who, during his time as the inflexible guardian of the estate, has created countless enemies in the relatively small community of writers of the genre. So when he is stabbed nearly to death in a room with only one door, which nobody was seen entering or exiting, Foulkes suspects a writer. Fearing that the assailant will return, he asks for police protection, and when more potentially-fatal encounters follow, it becomes clear to Detective Terry Marshall and his assistant, the inquisitive nun, Sister Ursula, that death awaits Mr. Foulkes around every corner. Now, they’ll have to work overtime to thwart the would-be murderer―a task that requires a deep dive into the strange, idiosyncratic world of science fiction in its early days.

With characters based heavily on Anthony Boucher’s friends at the Manana Literary Society, including Robert Heinlein, L. Ron Hubbard, and Jack Parsons, Rocket to the Morgue is both a classic locked room mystery and an enduring portrait of a real-life writing community. Reprinted for the first time in over thirty years, the book is a must-read for fans of mysteries and science fiction alike.
