Mobi to Epub or vice versa

Used a Kindle for over a year, recently got some Sony Readers and discovered Smashwords. They offer both formats. Which would yield overall better results; Downloading Epub for the Sony and convert to Mobi if need arises, or downloading Mobi and converting to Epub if required?

I believe EPUB is the higher def format (more style controls).
Conversion tends to introduce 'Loss' (of something).
I would start with the best.

Definately, Epub to Mobi. Epub is easily editable with Sigil before conversion.

Soo, when choice is available go with Epub and convert if required. Seems simple enough, appreciate the input.
