Question Expanding Images?

Hi!

I tested two images in Kindle. One was 1,600 pixels wide and 339 PPI (the larger image) and the other was 800 pixels wide and also 339 PPI (the smaller image).

For the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9, the Online Previewer in the Amazon’s KDP website displayed the smaller image as half of the larger image. The larger image filled the screen horizontally.

However, for the Kindle Fire HDX, the Kindle Voyage, and the Kindle DX, the Previewer displayed both images the same. That is, both images filled the screen horizontally.

Obviously, some Kindles expand the images. Is there a way to control how images are displayed?

Thank you!

They are not expanding the image, they are shrinking it. The ppi doesn't matter. An image whose pixel size is bigger than the pixel size of the screen is shrunk to fit the screen, unless there is another size specified somewhere.

Dear Dale,

Thank you for your reply!

You are right about shrinking. A 1,600 pixel/339 PPI image will be shrunk by e-readers with lower PPIs resolutions.

I disagree, however, that PPIs do not matter.

What I am saying about PPI is that it is not used in any form by the eBook reader to make a decision about the resultant size of the image. I did not mean it in the general sense of whether it mattered to person.
