Nintendo DS in HarperCollins Deal

It looks like Nintendo gamers are going to have something else to do with their consoles. Who wouldda thunk?

From the article:

"Nintendo, the Japanese video games company that brought us Donkey Kong and Mario the Plumber, is to announce a deal with the publisher HarperCollins today to make literary classics available to read on its DS portable games consoles.

The 100 Classic Book Collection ranges from Shakespeare and Dickens to Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. It will cost about £20 and will be available initially only in Britain.

Readers will turn the pages by brushing a finger across the screen. If the collection is a success, Nintendo may expand the range of books available."

i think the interesting detail of the article is the deal with HarperCollins ; although only PD books are involved so it's hardly revolutionary, it shows that publishers are getting more and more involved in epublishing and opening up to new media. maybe HarperCollins has decided to start with PD books as a low-cost experiment, but if things go well they might make more titles available for the DS. more titles is always good.

Ive read on both my DS and my PSP (PSP is better, DS's screens are too small)

ive read quite a few books on my PSP actually. but ever since i got my PDA/Cell its been stuck in the drawer, and now that ive gone through 3 different ebook readers, my cell phone is used more like a cell phone again.

Oy! Another eBook reader, woot! Article says the eBooks will be out December 26. I wonder what format. I would think loading in and displaying text format eBooks would have been easy enough for Nintendo to do, but I guess they needed HarperCollins to provide the files.

I think the idea of reading books on a DS sounds ... weird to me!
Why would anyone read books on a small screen, and have a heavy device for that?
Plus, the battery life isn't as great as the e-ink devices....

It'd be nice if you could browse online with it,reading books.
But probably you'll need to buy a $20 disk in order to read 5 or 10 books (which you can get for free from this site).

They would want to read on it because they already own it for other reasons. I suspect you can browse online with it if it supports WiFi but I am no expert on this device. See the wiki for how to use it as a reader.

What are the resolution of those screens? They look to be somewhat lo-res. I can't imagine it being a very "rewarding" reading experience!
