Adobe Digital Editions Rant

I'm not trying to do very complicated things, but ADE seems to fail every time. Of course, sometimes it might be me. But often it is ADE.

Ones I'm certain about:

Text in SVGs is very basic. It doesn't handle text-anchor, it doesn't handle letter-spacing.

Working around this limitations is time consuming, both because the work-around requires lots of manual tweaking, and also because of the time spent making sure that it really is ADE not handling something, and not just a syntax error.

If Adobe would actually publish a list of what ADE does and does not handle in the ePUB specifications, that would be really useful. Do they do so, and I've just missed it?

Grrr... even Mobipocket do that much.

ADE is the basic reason why I still doubt I will upgrade to the ePUB version of the Cybook Gen3 firmware... when it comes out

Yes, unfortunately we seem to be repeating "IE vs. the Web" in "ADE vs. EPUB"... when the market leader has a billion quirks and it makes following standards hard.

But the Adobe people are nice guys. Hey, my main complaint was lack of full justification and hyphenation and they fixed that, so now I'm more lenient. They're trying though... they're not updating ADE as fast as I'd like them to, but hopefully we'll get there some day.

But I'll grant you that ADE quirks are doing a not unsubstantial amount of harm to EPUB adoption.
