Just picked up some books on Google Play for $2.99. I have no idea how long these are on sale; most of them appear to be from Random House. It looks like Amazon has PM'ed some, but not all as of this moment.

- All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy
- The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
- Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
- Trainspotting by Irivine Welsh
- The Beach by Alex Garland
- American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
- Stardust by Neil Gaiman
- Model Behavior by Jay McInerney (for fans of Easton Ellis)

I searched high and low by author for some others since Random House is pretty stingy with discounts but couldn't find any. If anyone else spots any please report!

The Curiosity Cabinet by Catherine Czerkawska, her time-spanning past-and-present echoes literary fiction novel originally out from Polygon's Birlinn imprint in 2005, which was also shortlisted for the 2005 Dundee Prize. Czerkawska is a BBC Radio playwright as well, according to her bio blurb.

When Alys revisits the beautiful Hebridean island of Garve after an absence of twenty five years, she is captivated by the embroidered casket on display in her hotel. She discovers that it belongs to Donal, her childhood playmate, and soon they resume their old friendship. Interwoven with the story of their growing love, is the darker tale of Henrietta Dalrymple, kidnapped by the formidable Manus McNeill and held on Garve against her will. With three hundred years separating them, the women are linked by the cabinet and its contents, by the tug of motherhood and by the magic of the island itself. But Garve has its secrets, past and present. Donal must learn to trust Alys enough to confide in her and, like Henrietta before her, Alys must earn the right to belong.

Shepherd Avenue by Charlie Carillo, his coming of age literary novel set in an Italian-American family during the 1960s, originally out from Atlantic Monthly Press in 1986 and later picked up by Random House. This was listed as one of the American Library Association's Best Books of the Year at the time.

After his mother's death, a shy 10-year-old boy from the suburbs must find a place for himself with his grandmother's boisterous Italian-American family in a tough Brooklyn neighborhood in the summer of 1961.

Air Strike by Richard Townsend Bickers

Africa, The Second World War.
A Spitfire ground-attack squadron is fighting its way from North Africa across Sicily and up the length of Italy.
In Sicily one of its pilots is shot down, to his unquenchable indignation, by an American anti-aircraft battery.
His formidable Squadron Commander pays a dramatic call on the American Commanding Officer.

Historical with a Boris Johnson plug.

Viking Storm
by Julian Brazier

The last English kingdom is on the brink of extinction.
Each Anglo Saxon kingdom is overwhelmed in turn by ferocious, battle-hardened Viking warriors who can strike at a time and place of their choosing thanks to their famous longships.
Viking armies have conquered Northumbria, Mercia and East Anglia.
Now they are coming for Wessex and the young king Alfred cannot even rely on his own nobles.

`Julian Brazier has shone a light on the Dark Ages and given Alfred the Great the rip-roaring yarn he deserves. This generation has all but forgotten the astonishing achievements of the Saxon King, and how he saved England from a blood-crazed enemy - and re-founded the City of London. Viking Storm is a pacy and suspenseful blockbuster. Alfred lives!' - Boris Johnson

`New recruits to the territorial army should perhaps consult a copy of Viking Storm, a racy new novel by Julian Brazier, for tips on how to behave under fire. Brazier displays an alarming flair for describing violent conquest' - Sunday Times

Educated at Wellington and Oxford, Julian Brazier is the Member of Parliament for Canterbury and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defence responsible for reserve forces. He served for thirteen years as an officer in the Territorial Army, including five years with the SAS Reserves. He is married with three children.

If it's old enough it's literature ?

Memoirs of Fanny Hill by John Cleland

John Cleland was an 18th century English novelist best known for Fanny Hill, an erotic novel that was very controversial in England during its era and has the distinction of being one of the most banned books in the world. To this day, the novel is notorious for being synonymous with obscenity.

Drums Along the Khyber by Philip McCutchan is a US Kindle Countdown deal right now. It's from Endeavour Press, at $0.99 for about 3 3/4 more days before going to $3.99. It's in the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Countdown list, but the blurb makes it seem much more like historical fiction, so I'm posting it here.

Quote:
James Ogilvie emerges from Sandhurst a young subaltern bound for his baptism of fire in India.

Two generations of Ogilvies have served the 114th Highlanders, the Queen’s Own Royal Strathspeys.

James Ogilvie is the third generation.

Pitchforked with mixed feelings into imperial Britain’s elite military academy, Sandhurst, and then into the family regiment, he finds himself in 1894 a subaltern en route to India – a torrid journey out that teaches him the first lessons of military life and the command of men.

His initiation is made more difficult by the vindictive attentions of the adjutant, Captain Black, and by the high expectations placed on him by his own irascible father, his Divisional Commander on the North West Frontier of India.

Ogilvie gets his first taste of action when the Royal Strathspeys are sent through the Khyber Pass to contain the rebel Ahmed Khan outside Jalalabad.

Fighting the border tribesmen brings brushes with death, but also many opportunities for the kind of glory that can forge a distinguished military career.

But as the campaign goes on, Ogilvie also starts to doubt the entire Imperial project.

Drums Along the Khyber’ is a thrilling historical adventure story, rich in period detail. It is the first in the Ogilvie series of novels by Philip McCutchan.

‘The adventure-writer succeeds who makes you read faster than you really can…Drums Along the Khyber has something of this quality’ – The Sunday Times

Philip McCutchan (1920-1996) grew up in the naval atmosphere of Portsmouth Dockyard and developed a lifetime's interest in the sea. Military history was an early interest resulting in several fiction books, from amongst his large output, about the British Army and its campaigns, especially in the last 150 years.

Convoy of War by Philip McCutchan is also a US Kindle Countdown deal right now. It's from Endeavour Press, at $0.99 for about 2 3/4 more days before going to $3.99.

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the early stages of the Battle of the Atlantic, a vital convoy of ships leaves war-torn Britain.

They’re bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia, seeking much-needed supplies — armour, ammunition, foodstuffs — as well as Canadian troops to reinforce the battle-weary British army.

Leading the convoy is Commodore John Mason Kemp, mobilized from the liners for war service with the Royal Navy.

The commodore has weathered countless journeys at sea, but this is war.

Decisions often have to be made split-second and can mean lives saved or lost.

Amid sudden tempests and the constant threat of German U-boat attacks, Kemp also faces the challenges of an unlikely assortment of people aboard a war-time ship:

His young assistant, eager to prove himself but with a lot to learn.

The ship’s doctor, often too drunk to attend to the wounded.

The second steward, whose questionable morals harm more than just himself.

As the convoy picks its way through submarine-infested waters, this journey will prove to be the commodore’s most difficult yet.

Convoy of War is a page-turning naval thriller, and a rich depiction of war at sea.

Praise for Philip McCutchan:

“McCutchan is to be congratulated...” — Houston Post

"The military-series genre hasn't a finer craftsman than McCutchan." — Publishers Weekly

"His character conflicts are well organised." — Daily Telegraph

'A gripping page-turner.' - Tom Kasey, best-selling author of 'Trade-Off.'

Philip McCutchan grew up in the naval atmosphere of Portsmouth Dockyard and developed a lifetime's interest in the sea. Military history was an early interest of his, resulting in several fiction books about the British Army and its campaigns, especially in the last 150 years. He served throughout WW II in a variety of ships, including the cruiser Vindictive, the ocean boarding vessel Largs, and the escort carrier Ravager, ending the war as a lieutenant, RNVR.
