In looking again at the technology to double-check the oil/water, I did come across this presentation from a couple of years back, which says that Liquavista displays could be implemented on flexible backplanes. I don't know if they've actually done this, but I hadn't realised that this could even be an option. It makes me even more optimistic about the longer-term future of the technology.

There's a technical paper on their website if anyone wants to give it a quick read. It amazes me how we are looking at a technology where basic elements such as water and oil interact with electronics to get to the desired outcome of screen properties.

The old technomage fills his screeing bowl from the water pitcher his eager young apprentice has brought. Then he empties a small vial of oil into the water. Passing his hand over the bowl he activates the circuits in the bowl and a shimmering image of a very old dragon takes shape in the water. A rumbling voice comes from the bowl -"Knight takes Queen, Checkmate!" Wizards not being known for their self-restraint, it comes as no surprise that the bowl is immediately tumbling through the air and its contents forming numerous small puddles filled with the laughing face of a smug dragon. Luck; Ken |
