You can NOT make custom columns in the device view.
The device does not really communicate user input back to calibre, it mainly inventories books still on the device.

4 columns for read status :eek I use 1 column with 3 states: blank not read, X (false) = forget about reading this (I don't throw away books I don't like...someone else in my family may have lousy taste ), Check (true) = Read

There is a "Reading List" plugin: check out Get Plugins

Daffy is right the reading list plugin is what you want.

As for a column, I find having a readon column a great addition.
For one it doubles as a "read" column, as you've obviously read it. but it also has the Date "when" you read it - It's great to see exactly when you read that book, and sort by year, month etc even work out you reading rate per month.

As you can see in Image, I've not got rid of the "read" Column yet, but it's def superfluous now.

Oh if you have audio books, nice to incorporate them by having an audio column, you can always make a sudo text file and add that if you have not got the text version of an audio book.

Reading now, hrm, pretty pointless - pop over to Goodreads and make an account, then you can update things like that if you like, even how many pages you've read.

Um, on topic and with less emoticons, another +1 here for the Reading List plugin. Once you get used to using it, it's highly flexible. I use it for several different things. In the plugins subforum there is a pretty active thread for that plugin where you can get support if you need it.
