They still are the gatekeepers for their books, but there are a lot more options out there. Indies, buying overseas from a different distributor, free books in PD, even ebook libraries from other countries.

It would be good if piracy could be stopped, but SOPA certainly isn't the way to do it. Not that there really is a way to cut off the supply by drastic measures, educating people that piracy is wrong and making buying ebooks easier and somewhat more affordable is the only hope.

The REAL issue is neither SOPA or PIPA will do anything to stop piracy in any meaningful way. It will only create huge enforcement problems and MOST IMPORTANTLY will allow enormous potential for abuse. Both of these bills were written by the content industry i.e. the RIAA and the MPAA, with no input from the technology industry. What’s worse is they are being rammed through congress and into law without any negotiation.

The goal of both bills is to silence independent media under the guise of stopping piracy and other copyright violations. Hollywood’s interest may be to stop piracy; however, the Governments goal is to stifle dissent. If Hollywood withdrew its support these would still pass.

This whole thing isn’t really about anti-piracy, it’s about government control and killing the 1st Amendment. This power will be, and is INTENDED to be, used to stop free political speech in America by using the Internet. They'll just use some argument that you're infringing copyright, no proof needed, just like no proof is needed for NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act).

There obviously is enormous potential for abuse here, which is why we are all against it. But the goal is not to stop free speech but it is an attempt to stop piracy. It is a bill drawn up by the industry which is equivalent to using a cannon to shoot mosquitoes and it won't pass.

I am sorry, but the US government has no interest in killing free speech. This is not some secret attempt to kill the 1st amendment. (Even if this did pass it would have no effect on political speech).

The government does have a recent history of shutting down political websites with no cout proceedings, so any denisl of political motivations looks extremely foolish to those of us who follow news and political discussion forums closely.

Not even close.

There are plenty of news sources that aren't corporate in nature. In the age of the Internets, it's 1000x easier to find such a source than in earlier eras when you had 3 television networks and 1 or 2 local newspapers.[/QUOTE]

I think you have nailed it! The internet affords anyone the opportunity to research both sides of any issue, or even learn about issues not covered in the mainstream press.
Also the point made earlier in this post that the corporations are pushing this and the government will take advantage of it; Well who do you suppose paid for all of those politicians?

Well, that is how the Tea Party feels legislation should work. One party gets control and stuffs its entire platform down the other party's throat.

Political discussions do not belong in the main areas of Mobileread. If you wish to discussion the political reasons behind bills, rather than the effect they might have on ebooks, please start a thread in the Politics and Religion forum.

Further posts in this thread that are of this nature will be deleted.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, the "blackout day" appears to have been made up. Google, Facebook, etc. have all denied that they are going to have a blackout day. (Although Reddit looks to be having one.)

DNS provision pulled from SOPA, victory for opponents

"In a move the technology sector will surely see as a victory, a controversial antipiracy bill being debated in Congress will no longer include a provision that would require ISPs to block access to overseas Web sites accused of piracy.

Rep. Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas), one of the biggest backers of the Stop Online Piracy Act, today said he plans to remove the Domain Name System or DNS-blocking provision."

There are plenty of non-corporate sources of opinion, whether governmental or individual. But all of this planet's little-to-no-ax-to-grind news gathering organizations, at least that are coming to my mind at the moment, are currently organized as corporations.

Was this post political?

I hope that this does not violate this prohibition since it is really about the proposed bill.
