Sony PRS-350
So I can snatch a 6" touch edition for $100 at Borders during the final days of their closeout sale. How is this thing for reading *.pdf files? Is it a pain in the butt (like most e-ink readers)?

5" will be worse than 6", which is already godawful.

If it's a fairly simple text based PDF like a novel, (rather than a document with a complex layout), then the Sony readers do a reasonable job. Viewing a whole PDF page at a time is really too small, but once you zoom, the Sony PDF reader applies some reflow to the pages. The page header and footer are then not so separated from the main page text but it's not too bad. Maybe you can try your PDF on a friends reader.
One alternative, if you are familiar with ePub format, is to use calibre to convert to ePub and then hand tweak the initial result. Calibre doesn't do well with multicolumn PDFs at present but with something like a novel it will give you a good starting point. |
