how open is nook wifi?

how open is nook wifi? Is it possible to add apps or change system configuration? Is it possible to use it unregistered?

if you root it, you can add apps that have been developed for it. there aren't alot though. the main reason people root is for the library app which combines your b&n books and the books you sideload (the stock library app doesn't do this, it separates them). Also there are apps like Trook which you can use to connect to your Calibre server to download books from your computer's ebook collection.

not sure what you mean by system configuration? I *think* there was a way to change fonts, etc, but didn't really look into it.

You can use it unregistered, but i believe the new "shelves" feature in firmware 1.5 requires registering or your shelves won't save after a reboot.

by system configuration I ment for example what is possible with the kindle 3 - access linux system configuration files and modify some of them, for example editing the bigbrother script that sends various info about you to amazon or disabling the amazon proxy for certain addresses etc

On a rooted nook, you can disable communication with B&N so you do not get updates pushed onto you. However, they only way I found of doing this is through the command line and then using what ever text editor you prefer to edit the file and push it back onto the nook. With a tutorial it is pretty easy to do.
