That is a device called a "chorded keyboard" been around for decades.
Some background: http://trevors-trinkets.blogspot.com...keyboards.html But the idea of using the existing 5-way button on the device, that is a good one. Other 5-finger keyboards: http://www.google.com/search?q=five+...w=1099&bih=805 @twobob: If you can play a hit song with only six strings on the guitar, you should be able to write award winning code with only five keyboard keys. It is a good idea.
There are nine buttons along the bottom of the K4 if we count the two to the left and right of the 5-way. So this should take care of the complaints that the K4 doesn't have enough buttons. It will probably take a good bit of research to discover how to intercept all of the button events so that they can be translated into a full keyboard - but it should be possible. |

Weeeeell, 2^4 is 16, which is arguably not enough for the alphabet, and we should rule out the case where all switches are in 0 position to keep this case for "no key pressed". That said, I'm not sure whether the 4-way isn't just realized as a 2x2 matrix internally rather than 4 switches.
All that said, it somehow sounds a tad bit more viable to just hook up a USB-OTG capable microcontroller in USB serial host mode to the USB port. This also has the charme of not interfering with existing functionality... Hmmm... on my shelf, there's a PIC32MX220 test board waiting for some spare time and dedication... |
