Can i use iphone adapter to charge ipod?

Hello, I have ipod 5th generation (purchased in 2005), and it's power adapter no longer works. On it is written: output 5.0V 500mA. I wonder if i can use iphone charger. On it is written: output 5.0V 1A. Will it work on it, or is it safe for battery to charge with more powerful adapter at all?

Thanks for help

Yes, it'll work fine. The rating of the charger refers to the maximum current it's capable of delivering. The device will only draw the current it needs. It's always safe to use a charger whose rated current exceeds the requirement of the device, but not vice versa.

also make sure that the output voltage of the replacement charger is within 5% of the original charger's voltage spec.

Not an issue for a USB charger, of course. They are all 5V.

Well, not exactly. There are a number of fast-charge standards that will now kick specific models of "USB" charger up to 20 V. (see USB Power section of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB for some of these). This is not a hazard to a normal USB device like an e-book. I think those chargers have a data handshake with higher-power devices, identifying them, before kicking up the voltage.
