New use for reader - contour maps

We are planning to go on vacation to the coast this year and we like to do a little hiking.

It's always a good idea to have maps which show trails and the lay of the land, of the kind produced by the USGS. Series showing 7.5 degrees widths show the elevations and other features in detail, which increase safety and increase enjoyment of a hiking trip.

These maps are available as .tif images at: http://www.libremap.org/data/

You can convert them to .gif or .jpg which you can upload as pictures to your Sony Reader. The reader will not only zoom in on them, it will also allow you to pan from side to side.

Since these maps cover several miles of area, it is most useful to use a graphics editing program to crop to just the area you need and save it off separately.

Also the US Forest Service has basic maps of various hiking trails on their web sites for each National Forest, on which you can right click to save. You do this for nearly any kind of map on the web, but the bigger the better.

If in the UK, the ordnance survey has similar maps which you can save and put in your reader for a day trip. Chose get-a-map then the save option, which will get you similar contour maps. Canada seems to offer similar maps, but I had no luck finding an easy link to them.

Guess you'd still need paper maps as a backup - just in case something happened with the reader.
But I could certainly do without the exhausting origami workouts you have to go through with the paper versions

Great idea. Make sure you get a strong waterproof case to carry your reader. A good map case will usually work fine.
