Cutting Prices is the only way to stop piracy
Cutting prices is the only way to stop piracy Written by James Nixon on 15 March, 2011 The only way to stop piracy is to cut prices. That's the vedict of a major new academic study that reckons copyright theft won't be halted by 'three strikes' broadband disconnections, increasing censorship or draconian new laws brought in under the anti-counterfeiting treaty ACTA. http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/3/15/cut...y-stop-piracy/ |

Sorry, $8 is too much for me.
Does that mean I can ethically pirate it? |

now the question is, "how low should you go?"
and i think that there are people who are leeches and would continuously keep on pushing the limits as long as they can get away with it. |

At this moment many scientific books cost over $150 for about 800-1200 pages, a paperback edition. With all due respect, anyone who doesn't find that excessively expensive is in my opinion out of his mind.

If it is not on Netflix or Redbox, I don't need it, as far as moves and TV. For books, I will go out and buy Neil Gaiman's latest in hardcover or a book that I got in audiobook form from the library and really loved, I'll go out and buy the a book-book. I was turned onto Michael Gruber and John Connolly that way.

in terms of textbook prices, i think most are just rip-offs. they keep coming out with new editions every year, and they're all the same content. they just switch the chapters around and update the examples, but that's all. our profs usually just tell us to stick with the old edition unless a significant amount of time has passed enough that the amount of new content becomes substantial.

I think even if it were priced lower, people will still download pirated copies.

The Music Industry is a prime example of the effects of copyright enforcement. Nothing. After all the convictions, threats, etc., folks are still putting music up on the darknet.
Lowering prices will reduce pirating, but will not eliminate it. |
