Braille E-book Concept Design
Sorry if I miss this being posted. I haven't seen it yet, but Gizmodo is showing a Braille Ebook Reader concept made by Seon-Keun Park, Byung-Min Woo, Sun-Hye Woo & Jin-Sun Park using an "electroactive polymer". Exciting stuff.

I think that may be the single coolest electronic device I've ever seen. I want one, and I don't even know Braille!

I've often thought about a device exactly like this. I'm glad to see someone one has taken the idea and made it real.

Sweet! Current braille display devices can only display a single line, and although there has been talk of full-page displays for many years, this is the most serious proposal I've encountered.
I would like to nitpick and state that: 1. The braille in the concept image is uncontracted. Uncontracted braille is very rarely used, except by adult braille learners who first learned to read print. 2. A braille book is far more than double the size of the print edition. Ten times is probably more accurate, even if the braille is contracted. 3. The reading technique used in the concept image is that of a sighted person following a line of print with a finger. It's an inefficient and uncomfortable way to read braille. Most experienced braille readers use multiple fingers and both hands. I tend to read the first 1/3 of a line with my left hand, and the last 2/3 with my right hand while my left hand finds the beginning of the next line. 4. In the United States, less than 10% of blind people can read braille. This is partly due to an education system with an anti-braille attitude, and partly due to most blind people being adventitiously blind rather than congenitally blind. |

Oh, cool! I can see something like that being useful for diabetics who can't learn braille because of neuropathy.
