I had an epub that I couldn't read at all because the chapter was too long 'on the road' - scroll version by Jack Kerouac. If it could have loaded part of it into the cache I reckon it would have. Had to fix it by opening it in Sigil and adding lots of chapter breaks.

I was also wondering if you could change the battery in the glo for something a bit loner lasting.
P.S I'm new to this forum btw |

[QUOTE=Polly7;2369889]I was also wondering if you could change the battery in the glo for something a bit loner lasting.
P.S I'm new to this forum btw[I have not had much luck with lithium type batteries either, nowhere near as reliable or long-lasting as NiMH in my experience. If the Glo battery is replacable, I wonder if there is enough room to replace it with something bigger? I wouldn't mind the extra weight if I could get more reading time from it.] |

I would be interested to know if you come to some definite conclusion - ie problems with the files can impact battery life. If this is so then it could be the answer for a few problems.

I would like to know how a datafile, i.e. an epub or whatever, especially because of it's size, can effect battery consumption, when in sleep mode. Any memory/cache that exists to support sleep mode is kept powered on, but the size of the memory shouldn't change. How can you power up have a memory chip? Even when powered up, the static state of memory should have little/no effect of power usage. Likewise, a corrupt file may refuse to load, or load looking a little strange, but I cannot see how this effects battery life.

It does sound like Mrs_Often just has a defective battery so it would be interesting to know if it is now operating properly. |

my suspicion ... and why i asked the questions about the file ... is that the size of the file does affect battery drain. i have an 8MB epub I sideloaded, and I noticed incredibly fast drain on my battery. I've had a couple other kepubs that have been missing some of the chapter anchors and so they load large chunks -- 150 pages or so -- and they seem to drain the battery a lot faster than normal sideloaded epubs.
so, in my experience the size of the file, and how much of it gets loaded at a time, seem to affect drain, which I think is what Mrs. Often is also noticing on her device. personally, I always power down rather than put in sleep mode, unless I know I'm returning very shortly (like after fixing a cuppa). and I always return to the home screen. i don't know that either of these really change the consumption, but if there were a way to minimise battery consumption when not reading, then turning it off, or else putting it to sleep at the home screen (rather than with a book loaded) should minimise the drain. i've also just had a week where the battery meter kept bouncing between 90 and 100 ... and it sorted itself. so hopefully this was a one-off flakiness that's been sorted so she doesn't have to replace the battery. in the Netherlands, do you have battery stores that will rebuild internal batteries? I've seen them occasionally ... stores like this: www.mdsbattery.co.uk/ i've had such a place rebuild a laptopn battery before for half the price of a new battery, and it worked fine. |

Anyway I think I have found the cause of my Glo's lack of stamina, not related to the problems in the OP so I started a new thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=201925 |

I think that the os is based upon LINUX which is riddled with bugs and suffers from innumerable race condition problems. I understand that other major users like Amazon and perhaps Google very successfully use LINUX but they would have had it greatly modified and spent perhaps millions to remove the bugs that they are likely to encounter. Kobo can't do that. I reckon that Kobo is now at the same sort of place where Apple was [in the mid 90's] when they realised that they could now longer successfully develop their os and started to look around for a complete replacement for it -- neXt-step I think. Kobo has shown through their inability to control negative bug impacts upon users that they are not able to successfully develop their os from whatever the base is -- LINUX. We, the users, deserve a re-write. |

You'll find linux has less bugs than a lot of commercial software, simply because it is open and anyone can find and fix a bug, not just a small group of paid developers that have agendas put upon them. The reason linux is used for so many back end server systems is that it IS so stable and reliable. Problems with the Kobo reader have nothing to do with linux from what I've seen - it's all what Kobo have done. Race conditions cannot happen in sleep mode, or when powered off - which is, reportedly, a state in which these devices deplete their batteries. A rewrite is the last thing you want from Kobo. Writing an OS from scratch is beyond them. Even rewriting their reader code seems to be beyond doing without introducing more bugs than they fix. |

This sounds more like what the battery usage should be like! So I'm happy. Some notes: the epub is only 574KB. However, it is missing a lot of chapter marks. The first 7 chapters are contained in one file and are thus seen as one chapter, so in the kepub version, those are all loaded into cache. That's 255 pages (if I recall correctly) at the ready at any one time. So I would say not surprising that that drains the battery. Unless there's more wrong with the kepub file, but I doubt it. If you'd like to test/see for yourself: the book is David Baldacci's "Absolute power". I got it for about €0.39, but unfortunately the Christmas sale for it has ended. Quote:
