Yet Another Device for E-Reading

Add your Canon point & shoot digital camera to the list of devices you can use to e-read! An easy firmware replacement called CHDK (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK) gives you a text reader for your camera. The 40-character by 14-line display is very sharp on my 2.5-inch SD1000 LCD. It word wraps, scrolls manually or automatically, and remembers where you left off in the last text file accessed. The firmware and text files reside on the camera’s SD card.

It’s not an ideal way to read books, but it can’t be any worse than reading from most cell phone screens. A more practical use of the text reader could be to carry notes relevant to photography.

Of course, the real purpose of CHDK is to add additional photographic functions to the camera like shooting RAW images, extending ISO and shutter speed capabilities, and the ability to do all kinds of shot bracketing and time-lapse shooting from µBASIC scripts. There’s much more, but you get the idea. The text reader, games, and calendar are some of the functions under the “miscellaneous” menu. Using the CHDK firmware does not make any permanent changes to your camera, so the worst that can happen is that it won’t work for you. Check it out!
