Amazon axes copied content, duplicate Kindle Store ebooks get the boot
Under the idea of "private label rights," authors can ... sell their works to others who can rebrand and resell them. This week, Amazon cracked down on duplicate ebooks in its Kindle Store, pulling titles because they "diminish the experience for customers."

Yeah - the number of Kindle ebooks (in the US store) dropped from over a million back to 960,000 or so.
I noticed they are no longer listing books to be published in 2012 as available Kindle books. Now if they would remove the individual Shakespeare plays from the Mystery section, and from all sections as well. |

Are they getting rid of all the fake books that are just a bunch of wikipedia articles, too?

That answer really doesn't address the overarching issue, which is that it looks seedy as hell if your store sells a bunch of garbage. Which is why Amazon's been aggressively attacking that issue since it developed.

They should address the issue of fake reviews. I am not talking about occasional reviews from friends or family. Some PD books have over ten 5-star reviews within days of showing up on Amazon. The same accounts are used to pump the books from the same publishers.

'duplicate' is a vast understatement. One book I found was listed in every Kindle book category, each having a different cover image, (slightly different) title, and price.

One step at a time, I'd say. The removal of duplicates and junk books is a good step forwards. After they've streamlined that (to make sure it doesn't happen again), I agree, they should move on to the review section.

I find that fairly odd when a book has only been out a few days. When I see that, I wait for the rest of the reviews to come rolling in (namely some 1-star reviews).

I like that they're doing *something* about the spam ebooks; I have to wonder what the policy is about public domain works, and whether this will accidentally shut down reformatted & annotated PD ebooks.

They could switch over to how some app stores handle reviews-only people who bought the book (from Amazon) can post a review-although, I've read complaints from people who don't think they should even have to register an Amazon account in order to write a review, so, I'm sure that won't go over well

If books were able to be read before purchasing, none of these garbage books would exist. We would then have to discuss the meaning of the word garbage however...
