"Red Dawn Rising" - the fictional account of a Soviet invasion of western Europe - is my favourite Tom Clancy.

Actually, it's Red Storm Rising and that's my favorite Clancy book too.

Time for me to reread that one.

I like the earlier Clancy novels but IMO his later ones are weak.

Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter is one of the all time best, with Black Light and Time to Hunt close behind. Add in Dirty White Boys as second in the order and one has a 4 book series that ties together.

Never mind whether you spelled it right, your judgement is clearly rock solid at least IMHO.

And I do agree with TM; Clancy's earlier books were unquestionably his best.

He wasn't farming the writing out to unknowns back then.

Red Storm Rising was definitely one of his best. I can remember reading it back in the day when it seemed so plausible. Wasn't much of the action gamed using Larry Bond's Harpoon?

Agreed. Larry Bond is worth looking out for. He co-wrote Red Storm Rising, and has written novels himself. Red Phoenix was his first, I think, and very good. I've read a few others, but can't remember the titles now.

Some of his earlier books were Vortex (the U.S. intervenes in an hyper-apartheid South Africa) and Cauldron (the U.S. fights Germany and France). Both quite good in their day.

He has a newer series about clashes with a rising China (Red Dragon Rising). Has anyone read any of these?
