Finally, new Sony rumors

I didn't expect to be the first to see this, and apologies if it is elsewhere, or if I have done this wrong.

The two new Sony Reader devices will be very attractively priced, and are definitely much more compact and lighter than previous models with a possible width under 10mm. From what we’re hearing the new models will also have improved contrast and faster page turns. The PRS-650 will have a six inch screen while the PRS-350 will have a five inch screen. There will also be a bump in capacity from the usual 512MB or less found in currently Sony Reader models to 2GB of internal storage. We are not sure if that capacity bump extends to both devices, but will most certainly be true for the PRS-650. We also know that the PRS-650 will have Wi-Fi (and possibly free 3G), while the PRS-300 will not have any wireless connectivity (like the PRS-300).

I saw that about an hour ago. I've been expecting a new Sony Reader since Sony has released a new reader every year without fail since 2006 around October.

There is also a 950 on the way. And the touchscreen on the 900 rocks, at least for me. ;-)

Just what Sony needed; another reason for people *not* to buy the current-gen readers.

A 5" touch screen, huh?

It is consistent with the price drops in recent weeks of the existing models. Until the Kindle 3 is actually in market, there isn't a huge need to be dropping prices drastically or launching new models. A little market maintenance is a good idea, and drawing down unsold stock of old models, too. It's a very well kept secret if the models are going to hit as early as September.

The report strongly suggests Pearl screens:

Current-gens are sold out on Sony's website, but you can find them on discount sites like buy.com.

There's no shortage of Sony e-readers in Canada at the online Sony store, or the two largest big box electronic retailers. (Maybe because the 600 series is $230?)

If they manage to get rid of the glare, I am so ready for a 650 or even a 350.

Given the statement about not racing to be cheapest,I wonder what Sony considers attractive pricing? Same or above Kindle/nook?

Darn it, I knew I should have kept the 600's light cover!

With a proper touchscreen the Sonys can afford to be a bit more expensive than the Kindle3 as long as the 350 is under £150. Sony will never be able to compete with Amazon's ecosystem, so the whole issue of wireless connectivity is moot - the Kindle will always be a better choice for those scared of computers.

I have 200 books on my 505 and still have almost 60MB free, so internal flash capacity is a bit of a non-issue, but I suppose they have to play the numbers game for the spec sheets.

Or people who like the flexibility of getting the book they want to read when they want to read it. I could buy ahead on spec but why do so when I don't have to? I assure you, I'm quite comfortable with computers as are all the Kindle owners I know. I'm sure there are those that aren't but it's a bit of an assumption to make that the main appeal of the wireless is due to fear and incompetence.
