If you enjoy sifi, S.M. Stirlings "Island in the Sea of Time" trilogy is excellent. The books shift POV between several characters with Captain Marion Alston being pivotal in the plot line.

Gladiatrix by Russell Whitfield was actually a lot better than I expected it to be

"Room" is available as ebook in the meantime.

As for other novels with lesbian protagonists:

Sarah Dreher and her Stoner-McTavish Series
"The Well of Loneliness" by Radclyffe Hall
"Aimée & Jaguar" by Erica Fischer

One of the three main characters in Jim C. Hines' Princess series is lesbian. (Those books are fantasy - sort of "fairy tales meet Charlie's Angels".) I'm not sure it comes up in the first one (The Stepsister Scheme), but I know it's mentioned in the second (The Mermaid's Madness), and it's a bit of a side-plot in the third (Red Hood's Revenge). I think those books can be read out of order, too.
